The writings from first few episodes of Sanford&Son in season 1 were from UK version Steptoe and Son, including the episode "Copper Capers". But in that episode, the American version thrown in a hilarious racial situation that defined S&S and the direction it was going.
The scene was where black and white cop questing Fred about the stolen copper. The white cop was talking in official "white" language, and the black cop had to translate it to street ghetto language for Fred and Lamont to understand. And the audience were laughing and clapping. So the show made fun of racial situations and gather more audiences to tuning in next week for more racial comic relief.
