Default What age do you consider someone to be a senior citizen?

I came across the The SENIORSonly CLUB (Seniors Only Club) forum. I think it has been mentioned on here before. I see some familiar members and threads over there.

I will be turning 50 next year. Since when is 50 considered being a senior citizen?? What the heck.

I thought you had to be of retirement age, or a person that has reached age 62 or older to be considered a senior citizen.

What age do you consider someone to be a senior citizen? I voted for 65.

When age did you start feeling older? I started feeling older at around 35-36 when there were professional sports players half my age.

60 is the absolute minimum, but I could see it starting at 65 as well. No way are those in their 50s senior citizens yet.

Though AARP caters towards people 50+, they have no minimum age requirement.

A friend of mine has been a member for years to take advantage of the discounts.

The average retirement age in the U.S. is now 61.
So, some people think after you RETIRE
(but that could be at any age)

Maybe after reaching social security eligibility.
Those turning 62 who meet the eligibility criteria can start receiving Social Security benefits.

The government says:
Three months before a person turns 65, they can enroll in Medicare for the first time.

Today for a person to get full social security,
you need to be somewhere between 67 to 70.

Personal, I have been a "SENIOR CITIZEN"
since I graduated high school. (GET IT?)

I will soon be 63, my wife is 68, but if you would see a picture of us,
you would say we couldn't be that old!
Most people would guess we are only 50.

I never joined AARP and they tried to get me, I don't need them, and what discounts have I missed...can't imagine any....

I don't know when the Senior Citizen handle took over, but before, people were older or of old age status....

You say you are going to be 50, is that what I understand....you bring in stuff from the Seniors site so I'm a tad confused...then you say you felt getting old at 35 or thereabouts. I was thinking of writing a book back then and title it Forever 39, as I was so young in so many ways ...

I still don't feel mentally old at 85, but body has been crying since hip job at 72 and all the damage I live with. My neighbor who came across so strong and alert just died at 96 after 2 bad falls in 2 days. I miss her but what a long good life. She had some issues but managed them.

I voted 65, although I wish it were younger ! I wish we could start getting Medicare at 60, and have that be a good age to retire and still get your full money amount! I want so bad to early retire, but the money will be so much lower !

There's a difference between starting to feel older and being put in the senior citizens group. I had a good chuckle when I read their introduction. I guess they had to expand it 50+ because limiting it to 65+ would decrease their membership pool.

I don't think many people would consider 50 year olds to be senior citizens. 65 is winning this poll in a landslide.

I'm glad there's a forum for you and your fellow senior citizens to mingle and discuss the important issues.

My last employer pulled one on me and let me go at 62, I was going to hang in until 65 but she had other plans for me. I sued them and got a settlement and that helped and made me feel GOOD.

From 62 to 65 I did FT and PT childcare for cash and that was a great filler for the SS I took at 62.. It's worked out and I'm alone , no one helps me and I chose NOT to buy all the costly tech gadgets thrown at us over the years....

My uncle way back in the mid-1960s was let go by the Bendix Corporation just one day before he turned 40. The thing behind it was that, by his not reaching age 40 with the company, he was denied a pension. He'd been with Bendix for over 10 years. My dad urged him in later years to sue, but he never did.

At 55, many businesses extend their discounts. I have yet to be with people who decline the discount.

I went with that age on the survey.
