I always wondered about this jail windows it would get pretty wet in there when it rained and pretty cold in th e winter time, not to mention the security risk.

I've wondered that too.... I think the windows are supposed to face the BACK of the courthouse, even though it doesn't match up

When Ben is back there looking in it seems to me that there's a space behind Floyd's Barbershop where the windows are, and Floyd's shop is definitely smaller than the main room of the Courthouse.

After years of thinking about this I've pretty much convinced myself of this.

Barney did pull the whole dang wall down in one episode, with a rope (or chain?) tied to the bars.

I know this has nothing to do about the jail windows, but for dog gone sakes. Could they have hanged the jail key over by Andy's desk instead of the hook between the two cells?

It's a great show, but their placement of the key was beyond silly.

Yes, it was silly. But maybe they did it so Otis could let himself in and out.

Ernest T. Bass apparently took advantage of the easy access to the jail keys as well, as discussed in another thread.

Must have been shutters on the windows we don't see.

In a record episode with guest star Bill Bixby, Andy tells Otis to lock up the Courthouse and shut all the windows when he leaves.

Andy also tells Otis to take any phone calls that come in while he, Barney and Bixby go home Sunday dinner with Aunt Bee.

Otis is pretty much an unofficial deputy.

There's a small alley area between the courthouse and the barber shop which is closed from the main street.

This can clearly be seen in the episode with Cousin Virgil, there's a few feet outside the jail windows and a privacy fence at Floyd's property.

I remember an episode where Floyd mentioned a rose bush he was growing back there.

Famously, Mr. Weaver can be seen in the small alley in the Christmas episode.

Only Otis and Ernest T. Bass seemed to figure out the key was so easy to get to.
