Adding Ralph Macchio - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I have been re- watching Eight is Enough on DVD. I have a question about
Ralph Macchio. Does anybody know the reason they added him to the series?
What was the purpose of him being on the show? I didn't like the character
and and always thought his character took away screen time and story lines
from David, Tommy and Nicolas. Just wondering.

Maybe Adam Rich was becoming too old and beginning to acquire baggage as a child actor?
