This year marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. It was the only Sid & Marty Krofft series to run more than one season before Land of the Lost. Johnny Whittaker and Scott Kolden portrayed brothers who befriend a sea monster named Sigmund who was kicked out of his home because he couldn't scare people. There was also Mary Wickes as housekeeper Zelda and Joe Higgins as Sheriff Chuck Bevins. Margaret Hamilton was nosy neighbor Miss Eddels.
Sigmund's family, who attempted to bring him back home were Big Daddy, who sounded like Archie Bunker, Sweet Mama and his mean twin brothers Blurp and Slurp. There was also Prince, the barking lobster. The first season was great to watch and also Whittaker would sing on the show (including the show's theme song). But in the second season, I felt the show jumped the shark when Rip Taylor was added as Sheldon the Sea Genie and more episods focused on the relationship between Sigmund and Sheldon. Also, Fran Ryan replaced Wickes. If you remember Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, feel free to post. |
