Sad Jimmy Buffett (1946 - 2023)

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ne...er-1235580669/

Jimmy Buffett, a singer and businessman best known for his hit song “Margaritaville,” which kicked off a themed restaurant chain and hotels, has died. He was 76.

A statement shared on his website and social media late Friday, read, “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

A cause of death is not yet known.

Born on Dec. 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffett went on to pursue a career as a country singer after graduating from college. He started out by working with the cover band The Now Generation before focusing on his solo music.

It wasn’t until the early ’70s that Buffett scored his first record contract and later released his debut album called Down to Earth, though, it didn’t catch many people’s attention.

Soon after, when he moved to Key West, Florida, he adopted the laid-back beach bum persona that he was most recognized for today. Around that time, he signed with ABC-Dunhill Records and released White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean in 1973 – the album that started to put him on the map.

But it wasn’t until he released his sixth album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, in 1977 that he started to attract a mainstream audience. Especially since it included his hit track “Margaritaville.” The following year, he dropped Son of a Son of a Sailor, which included another one of his most successful songs, “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

Buffett’s other popular tracks include “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere,” “Come Monday,” “Volcano” and “It’s My Job.” He has also collaborated with other artists over the years from Zac Brown Band for “Knee Deep,” and Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith and George Strait for “Hey Good Lookin’.”

In total, Buffett has released dozens of albums over his more than 50-year career, as well as headlined 40-plus concert tours. He had 13 songs reach the Billboard Hot 100 list, including “Margaritaville” making it to the Top 10 Hits.

After seeing what a success his beach-bum image was, Buffett decided to expand his brand, becoming not only a performer but a businessman. He came out with several books, beach-themed clothing, a Margaritaville restaurant chain, hotels, resorts and more.

To me, he was a one-hit wonder. I couldn't believe it when I found out that he was one of the richest people in show business. I just never got why he was so popular.

It depends on your definition of hit. He had 5 songs to make the Billboard top 40 pop singles chart. Only one, "Margaritaville", made the top 10. The others including my favorite, "Come Monday" didn't get past the top 30. Some consider a one-hit wonder as any one song by an artist that made the top 10. Others including myself, the late Joel Whitburn, etc...define it as having made the top 40. You say you never got why he was so popular, I could ask that question of many of today's artists.

His wealth mostly came from hotels, restaurants, resorts, and home building.

By trading on his name as a musician. I wouldn't go to a hotel named the Buffett. I wouldn't even go to a buffet named Buffett.

The newest person to go on is musical legend Jimmy Buffett. So far, it has not been said yet what sickness was on his plate. He was 76. I love the following duets that Jimmy did in country music.

"Margaritaville" with Alan Jackson
"Hey Good Lookin'" with George Strait, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, and Toby Keith
"Trip Around The Sun" with Martina McBride (I play this every year on my birthday.)

God bless you and his family and his musical circle members always!!!

Holly

P.S. After "Margaritaville", "Come Monday" was the only other song from him that I knew of.

I completely agree with you. There's a Christmas song that Jimmy Buffett recorded titled Christmas In The Caribbean that I still hear sometimes around Christmastime, might have to see if I can find a copy of any Christmas albums he did this year. Along with Margaritaville I particularly enjoy his duet Trip Around The Sun with Martina McBride. He will be missed.

My mom's first exposure to Jimmy Buffett was when she was actually supposed to go to a George Strait concert back in the 80's and when my father and mom were just friends and he kept promising Mom tickets for George Strait's concert and she kept asking and asking my father for the tickets until days before the concert my mom heard bad news from my father that the George Strait tickets were sold out and my mom was so mad and she didn't ask him why the George Strait tickets were already sold out in the first place but Mom asked for an apology from my father and the next day he tried to buy her a nice gift of friendship and my father gave my mom a Jimmy Buffett cassette as a friendship gift and she disliked it and believe it or not Mom still has that cassette somewhere but each time she tells me the story it always makes me giggle. My favorite Jimmy Buffett song is Door #3 because it's about Let's Make A Deal and you got to admit the song and lyrics are pretty funny

Sad to hear the news about Jimmy Buffett. Come Monday is a good tune, when I listen to it, it sounds like it could be a Bellamy Brothers song. Margaritaville is Jimmy's signature tune, the first 45 RPM vinyl pressings of it on the ABC label have an edited version of the song, later pressings on the MCA label have the full version.
