As others have pointed out, both Gloria and ABP had solid numbers overall, but I think the change in production companies made the network execs nervous. And then there's Carol O'Connor to deal with.
Perhaps, a preliminary decision had been made to retain only one of the former Lear shows. If you keep Gloria, then CO was going to be bustin' down the door wanting to know why his show was cancelled after proven to be a longtime hit and a weaker show (in the eyes of CO) stays on the schedule. No matter which show, both CO and SS would be demanding a bigger paycheck and the network probably thought that both shows were mediocre at best. And I do think the network noticed the drop after a huge lead in program. |
