“Public Domain” Monkees tunes?—OR—Music Licensing

First of all, with Catchy Comedy running the Monkees this weekend, Im surprised that there haven’t been new threads. That being said:

A couple of years ago I believe The Monkees were shown on Antenna TV. Unless I am hallucinating, I seem to recall one of their tunes “dubbed over” the original one. As I recall, maybe using Shazam, it was a tune from 1969 or 1970, long after the series ended. I guess the tune was in public domain.

Does anybody know the state of music licensing for shows like The Monkees, where music matters? In the case above, apparently the original song wasn’t allowed on Antenna TV.

And…is the situation different on Weigel/MeTV/Catchy? Obviously they seem to have more in their coffers.

That sure was weird. Anyone? Sorry if I’m all over the place here!
