JJ was known for his silly, outlandish, energetic, foolish clown, full of life antics, but in the end, JJ became calm, snarky, sarcastic, sardonic, witty, etc. He kind of seemed like James in Season 4, 5, and 6. I remember a Poster saying something like,"I'm glad JJ FINALLY learned that not everything was a joke starting in Season 4. JJ seemed more sarcastic and witty and seemed to know when to make jokes and when to be mature, something that was solely missing in Seasons 1-3. Seasons 1-3, JJ was a straight up immature fool and a clown. But Seasons 4-6, JJ had calmed down a lot and stopped acting like an immature foolish clown and actually made good, snarky and sarcastic jokes. I actually prefer Season 4-6 when he made snarky and sarcastic jokes over his immature, foolish clown persona from Seasons 1-3."

He still seemed pretty goofy to me during Season 4, but it did look like they were trying to turn him into more of a straight man by Season 5.

No, he definitely was VERY calm starting in Season 4. His deadpan,"I hope your dog dies!" Was both shocking and funny.
![]() Season 1-3 JJ would never have said anything as snarky as that. In Season 5, he told off Charlene for CLEARLY not showing Penny any sympathy when it was clear Penny was in pain. He told off Ray for trying to rape Thelma and even tried to beat him up but Willona stopped JJ from beating up Ray and punched Ray himself.JJ was disgusted by Keith slapping Thelma and didn't even playfully,"Put up his dukes, just said something like,"I really don't want to talk to you!" Fan said something like,"JJ just let Keith slap Thelma and didn't even "Put up his dukes!" Another Fan said something like,"JJ "Put up his dukes," when he was trying to be comically funny. JJ knew that Thelma being slapped by her Husband was no time to be comically funny. JJ really had grown up a lot in Season 6. " JJ got a job to keep Thelma from dropping out of school and to keep the family from being evicted. JJ kicked Barbara to the curb when he realized she was giving him ulcers by still dating her ex husband while dating JJ. JJ seriously told Lloyd to tell Thelma about his prison time for being married to two different women at the same time. JJ tried to be an authority figure for Michael when Michael ended up at a Police station. JJ saved a man from dying after the man purposely overdosed after his girlfriend cheated on him. JJ was suspicious of Miss Gordon when Miss Gordon came to pick up Penny(JJ had a look of Penny's Mother is abusing Penny!) JJ snarkily said,"That pussycat sure leads a troubled life!" To Penny showing he was suspicious of Penny's lies about her fake cat causing her injuries.
