In the episode where Opie finds a change purse with $50 in it, he says he was walking home from school when he found it but when you see the video he's walking down some desolate country dirt road, its hard to believe his school is way outside of town.

That is kind of similar to Lawman Barney episode in which Barney comes out of snack bar in downtown Mayberry and sees 2 farmers selling produce on the side of a road, but when he drives over there to confront them, it's on a desolate country dirt road.

That's sort of like in the color episode where Opie is running a race with Helen's niece, and the wooded road to Wally's filling station is pretty much in Andy's back yard.

The kids ran all the way from Andy's front yard to Wally's?

Yes, it definitely seems that it was a good little ways out of downtown.

Yet they were OK with Bert Miller setting up shop and selling his wares on the street near the courthouse. And Newton Monroe doing the same at Wally's.

Locations tend to be very fluid in Mayberry. A perfect example is Emma Brand's house which is by the lake in "The Manhunt" but seems to be in the middle of town in "Ellie Comes to Town." Another example is the Mayor's office which appears to be located in the same building above the courthouse in the early episodes with Mayor Pyke, but then appears to be located a few blocks away in later episodes with Mayor Stoner.

Apparently, Emma Brand baked pies every day. Who was she baking them for?

In "Loaded Goat", Mayor Stoner mentions his office is above the courthouse. But how did he or anyone else gets up there? No stairway is visible inside or outside.

The other night I was watching METV, the episode "The Big House" was on, the episode prominently features the exterior of the courthouse in the plot. I love this episode but confusion abounds as to the whereabouts of people and how they got there in the first place.

An exasperated Andy tells Barney to join Gomer on the roof of the courthouse and sends him out the front door to complete this task. How is he getting to the roof, is he climbing up Spider-Man style? While Barney's on the roof he crouches down crossing the roof to get a view from another side, looking down he spots two plainclothesmen hiding in the building's side alley who he believes are henchmen of the two jailed bad guys. The problem of course, the building has no side alley! It gets even more bizarre, Barney decides to go down an apprehend the two, he successfully accomplishes this by getting the drop on them from behind, how did het get there? The alley has only one way in, the men were stationed at the backend enclosed on the sides and from behind by walls! The wackiness continues as the actual henchmen go in through the courthouse side entrance, get their buddies out, imprison Barney and the plainclothesmen, and the four bad guys run out the side entrance only to be recaptured by Andy who races out from behind the building. If Andy could see the side entrance from wherever he was stationed, why didn't he stop them from going through the side entrance in the first place?

In The Sermon for Today, the band members are a completely different bunch of guys than the ones from The Mayberry Band. And how did all the uniforms get so messed up in such a short period of time?

That episode always bugged me and shows what a terrible sheriff Andy was, he let Bert get away with much because because he's a friend of Andy's and treated poor ben weaver terribly even though he owns a big store and employs many and pays property tax and other taxes.

Just saw that episode tonight.opie has great eyesight he can see the tree from their house, they run a little while and are in the middle of some dirt road and a few steps more theyre at wallys filling station.Also I never understood why wallys is in the middle of nowhere you would think a gas station would be somewhere downtown.

The location of the Mayor's office is of course a source of constant speculation.

If upstairs in the Courthouse, where are the stairs?

Seems the most obvious location for the stairs are either near the break/sleeping area or in back of the Courthouse where there's also probably a parking lot for Jury trials and so on.

I speculate that from there, upstairs, offices such as Howard's and the nurse are along a hallway above Floyd's barbershop and the grocery store, et certera.

A better spot for Wally's gas station, actually.

The direction Opie and his friend ran would put it not far from the main drag of town, so I'm good with that.

Also explains why Gomer and Goober can get to the Courthouse and barber shop so quickly and easily.

Opie may have been walking home from school but not directly home, in other words, out wandering around?
