Agreed, that matches my observation. As you say, he started out with SOME sense, but later on they made him so stupid that he basically just became a cartoon character. Which is a shame, because it was totally unnecessary, and only hurt the series IMO.

My favorite Jethro joke was when some investor friends of Mr. Drysdale thought Jed was a financial wizard, and the whole family was geniuses. They had seen a paper on the kitchen table that Jethro was "ciphering" on, and one of them talked about how advanced he was. He said he had invented some sort of new math, "two plus two equals five to him".

Yes! And the dynamic between Jed and Jethro changed... In the early episodes, Jed seemed to really admire Jethro and look up to him as "educated"... But in the later episodes it seemed like Jed knew he was an idiot and more less felt sorry for him.. Sometimes Jed would just nod and go along with whatever silly thing he was saying, knowing it was non-sense lol

Another thing I've noticed with the color episodes:
The walls of Mr. Drysdale's and Miss Jane's office in the bank are painted green. And one of the rooms that they usually show in Mr. Drysdale's house is also painted green. I'm wondering if this was done to symbolize his obsession with money?

I think they've also shown the Drysdale bedroom, but I don't know if that was in a color episode, or if the walls were green.

I'm also a little disappointed that they no longer play the old Commerce Bank theme that they used in early episodes. I wonder why they got rid of it, I kind of liked it?

Hmmm it could be! I think green is a standard color for many offices... I have a vanity mirror with lights and you can the change color of the lights to replicate how you might look in different locations and in different lighting there is "daytime", "home", "office", and "evening"... And the "office" color is a light green.

And they did away with all the customized theme music in the color years I think... Miss Jane's, and Elly's also

Yes, Elly May, Miss Jane, Commerce Bank. Music licensing fees are probably expensive, and going color costs more. Bean counter probably said, we have to cut somewhere.

Wow, I didn't notice that they stopped playing the Elly May theme, I'll have to keep my ear out for that. That would be a damn shame if true, that's a nice piece of music. I know it lasted a lot longer than the Commerce Bank theme.

I haven't watched these shows in many, many years. In the early shows I was actually a little shocked to see the front views of the mansion that they showed, because I didn't think they had showed them. I had heard the owners of the mansion didn't want a bunch of tourists coming around and were reluctant to give out clues as to where the mansion was in real life.

I would assume it to be a case of Perry Botkin vs Curt Massey (music for later episodes). I am sure both PB & CM were quite protective of their creations.

It may not have stopped for the color seasons, but I'm pretty sure it didn't last for the whole series. Yes, it's a nice composition.

Yes, I read this was the reason they stopped. And it might have stopped before the fourth season. It's easy to tell; I think the end credits use a long shot at the beginning, then dissolve to the Clampetts coming out the door for the waving. Then, at some point they just used the shot at the door.

That's a damn shame if true, I thought those individualized themes really added something to the show. When I hear the more generic background music put in, honestly it irritates me because I know they could do better. I still think the Elly May music hung on longer than the others though.

So I'm up to season seven now (watching on MetV), and I notice we're into our third version of the intro. It's the same as the old one, except they've added Mr. Drysdale and Miss Hathaway, driving in her red convertible at the end of the intro. Up until now, they've put their names on the end credits, so it's nice to see them get a move up.

Only two more seasons after this one. While the concept is starting to wear thin, the show is still funny, and I get laughs out of almost every episode. I think the writing's pretty solid during this time, although the show is still goofy.

There was a similar discussion related to the green color seemingly being overused in The Andy Griffith Show forum. The key thing to remember is just because the show was in color doesn't mean people were watching in color, the fact of the matter was they weren't. This is what I wrote in the Griffith show forum:

"The overwhelming majority of homes in 1965 were watching in black and white. In 1965 there were 57.5 million households in the United States, only 2.8 million had color TV's. Color was growing in leaps and bounds make no mistake about it, the 2.8 figure was January 65, by October the figure would reach 4.6 million".

The green color looks like a shade of gray on a black and white television which makes for a good contrast.

Those are good points... I always wondered what it would be like to watch a color episode of The Andy Griffith Show in black and white... lol I'm thinking pretty trippy because the color era was sooo different, you'd have the look of a black and white episode but a totally different feel lol
