Default Color Episodes

They started season four on MeTV this week, so we are now into the color episodes. It's interesting how they reshot the intro so it would be in color.

In the old intro, when Jed rushes into the house and grabs Granny, there was always the impression he was excited about his oil find. But what was actually happening in that black and white clip was Jed was worried because Jethro was cutting down a tree outside, and he was afraid it would fall on the cabin. Jed and Granny run to a window.

In the color version, Jed and Granny run out the door, so I guess it's supposed to imply that they are excited about the oil find. Which doesn't quite go with the actual events in the beginning of the series, because Jed didn't realize that the oil had value.

I also notice Elly doesn't seem quite as animated in the color version.

Wow I never really paid attention! Some of the original scenes were from s1e1 “The Clampetts Strike Oil.” I never thought the scene was re-shot, but I guess so, as in 1962 nobody was thinking about color. And, computer colorization was wayyyy into the future.

Yes! I've always noticed it was a totally reshot intro... They updated the Clampetts to match their look in the color version.... i.e. In the color intro, when Granny is in her rocking chair on top of the truck she is wearing her hat, whereas in the black and white intro she is not, there is a deer in front of the cabin as the pull away in the black and white into, but it's gone in the color one, etc... and the cabin looks different, the furnishings, etc....

As far as Jed being excited about the oil, true he didn't know what it was, but he just knew there was black liquid shooting out of the ground, that enough would excite him and wanna tell Granny, "Hey!!! Look at this!" That's how I took it anyway.

I have a funny story about the reshot intro, as a kid I watched the color episodes first, I'm thinking, so when I saw the black and white opening for the first time I noticed when Jed runs in to tell Granny, that Granny is standing further back ~away from the camera~ than she is in the color episodes, and it looked to me like Jed ran toward where Granny SHOULD have been standing ~in the color episodes~ but sees she's not there, then SPINS AROUND to see her further back on the other side of the counter... At that time I just thought Granny had changed her position and confused Jed lol

That makes sense from watching the intro, and was similar to my impression. Actually, I always thought Jed was running into the cabin to grab Granny because they were leaving for California.

But if you watch the original episodes, Jed knows that Mr. Brewster wants to buy his slough, but he's confused as to why, because it won't be any good for farming, because it's full of oil. He also tells cousin Pearl that he paid him in some new sort of dollars - "million" dollars.

Good point on the deer being gone, I had forgotten about the deer.

The pilot episode is strange to me... You may remember I used to post about the Mandela Effect here quite a bit, where large groups of people share a common misremembering. Many people remember the pilot episode of Beverly Hillbillies being very different.... My grandparents were some of them!

My grandparents PLUS a woman I used to know say they remembered the pilot episode actually SHOWING Jed strike the oil, like we see in the opening. But in the actual episode, the swamp is full of oil, I don't even get the impression that Jed SHOT the oil out of the ground! And it seems ALL the references to Jed "SHOOTING the oil" out of the ground are gone in the actual episodes, I thought I remembered Jed telling the story of how he shot at an animal and missed and the oil came gushing up, but I can't find where he talks about it at all.

Also the woman I talked to said she remembered Jed and Jethro TYING Granny in her rocking chair and she was putting up a fight.... but that scene doesn't exist, as she seems totally CONTENT sitting there, which I thought was strange. But what's even MORE strange is that scene DOES exist in the 1993 movie, Granny is tied in her chair and his putting up a fight.... and the woman told me her memory of that a few years before the movie even came out!

I started watching on METV, Then somehow my dvd recorded the show on FETV and occasionally LAFF network so I have bounced around. In a later seasons ?8/9 Mr Drysdale and Miss Jane are seen driving in opening credits. I do think the show as of season 6 or so is not so hot. Poor Max Baer in his Jethro ambitions. I was hoping Jethro was to enter the service for it would have given him some direction and to give Max something a little brainier acting to do. . Think the show was filmed and I guess took place in the 1960's and many males enter the service.

Yeah, I think the whole shooting the oil out of the ground is an invention of the theme song, and that's about it.

Regarding the Mandela Effect, I have several false memories of the Beatles that are extremely vivid to me. Like I remember seeing a clip of John and Paul singing "Cry Baby Cry" on some show like David Frost, but that doesn't seem to have ever happened. I have a few others as well. The only thing I can think of is maybe it was a dream I had (unless it was an alternative universe, of course).

By the way, the first color episode was the one where Jed goes to look at a yacht dressed as an admiral, and he accidentally gets on a Navy destroyer instead, and the crew thinks he's a real admiral. I thought that was one of the better episodes since it's such a great premise for a situation.

I'm only up to season four on MeTV right now, but I'm sure I've seen them all before, when I was much younger. Now that you mention it, I do remember a version of the opening theme where they insert a shot of Mr. Drysdale and Miss Jane driving. Good for them, after that many seasons, they finally made the opening credits lol.

I have a lot of wrong memories as well. For e.g. I seem to recall in the earliest black and white episodes of the B.Hillbillies, like maybe for the 2nd or 3rd episodes, the opening being a little different, I seem to remember the Clampetts driving down a country, rural type road and Jethro is munching on a chicken leg as he drives. Instead of them driving down the Beverly Hills Blvd. as they actually are in the shows openings. I so vividly see that in my mind, I remember thinking to myself as I watched, "Man this MUST be an EARLY episode!"

And I'm surprised the yacht episode didn't spawn a 3-4 episode saga actually lol

I think they save those multi-episode sagas for characters and storylines that are annoying. I'm half kidding.

Nope, I don't have any memory of the rural road opening with the chicken leg lol.

Unrelated to the chicken thing, the early original network openings go longer, with their drive proceeding on, and Jed pointing out a Winston cigarette billboard.

They are on some Paul Henning DVDs, probably on MPI, that came out many years ago. IIRC he was somehow able to use the original music, which is one hangup with doing public domain DVDs.

That was included in the Hulu airings back when they had it. In some of the other episodes it was Kellogg's or "Kellogg's of Battle Creek" as the singer called it.

Another subtle change I notice from earlier to later episodes is that Miss Jane always seemed to like Jethro. In the early episodes, Jethro seems to reciprocate some interest, but later on he doesn't seem interested in her at all, and seems more oblivious to her come ons. He's become more interested in the more youthful Hollywood types.

Jethro was simple but loveable in the early b&w episodes... He was simple but was not a total idiot. He did have SOME sense and occasionally figured things about before the other members of the family did.... like about the telephone, he knew Pearl didn't have a phone so there would be no need to try and call her, whereas the others seemed to think they could just MAGICALLY call her even though she had no phone lol And he DID know what a phone was and the rest of the family did not.... So, Jethro did seem to have some knowledge from his "schooling" at that point.

In the later episodes he become totally unlikeable lol

Agreed, that matches my observation. As you say, he started out with SOME sense, but later on they made him so stupid that he basically just became a cartoon character. Which is a shame, because it was totally unnecessary, and only hurt the series IMO.

My favorite Jethro joke was when some investor friends of Mr. Drysdale thought Jed was a financial wizard, and the whole family was geniuses. They had seen a paper on the kitchen table that Jethro was "ciphering" on, and one of them talked about how advanced he was. He said he had invented some sort of new math, "two plus two equals five to him".
