Theodore J. Kaczynski, the so-called Unabomber, who attacked academics, businessmen and random civilians with homemade bombs from 1978 to 1995, killing three people and injuring 23 with the stated goal of bringing about the collapse of the modern social order — a violent spree that ended after what was often described as the longest and most costly manhunt in American history — died on Saturday in a federal prison medical center in Butner, N.C. He was 81.

A spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Mr. Kaczynski was found unresponsive in his cell early in the morning. The cause of death was not immediately known.

This case originally aired on the September 24, 1987 Special #3 episode of Unsolved Mysteries hosted by Karl Malden.

A brief update was broadcast on the April 19, 1996 episode while a more in-depth update, investigating a connection between the Unabomber and the Zodiac Killer, aired on the September 20, 1996 episode.

Yes I read this earlier on CD ...... Many are saying he should have died that day in the struggle with FBI...

I saw 1 person vote for the first poll option (Thread has a poll) "He was a model to society" --- I dont know what model he could have possibly been!!

The Unabomber segment was THE very first UM segment I ever watched.

As a child that scene where the person indoors was looking at him through venetian blinds in the Carpark and then he looks up and straight at the Camera scared the absolute bejesus out of me!

There is a very large "community" of people that think Ted K was on the right track and the damage he caused was collateral damage in the good fight against bad society. Do a search on Twitter for "Uncle Ted" and see.

I was either 12 or 13 when that augment of the segment aired and I too, was scared sxxxless.

But I have also been hooked on the show ever since.

The two locations he killed people in Sacramento still exist. It’s weird to know what happened there even though it’s been almost 40 and 30 years respectively.

It's terrible when brilliance goes haywire. If not for his mental health, many lives would have been saved and perhaps this guy would have had ideas beneficial to the world. Some of his beliefs weren't without merit, but sadly all mixed up in a schizophrenic soup.
