That's verbatim from the segment, so it's a little ambiguous, but I always under the impression Jones gave the full plate number. I thought it was a case of anchoring and adjustment--if the plate didn't in fact exist, the police then ran partial searches using a similar character in place of one given to them by Jones.

The way I am reading that is the searched one whole complete license plate and it was attached to the vehicle that was described on detail AND they used partial digits from the plate number as recalled in any varying combinations/permutations that were linkef to any vehicle matching the description.
Also, this was late 80s, right? I find it hard to believe they were able to track down the vehicle so fast and given this was a person of color, an immigrant living/working in an urban/socio-economically disenfranchised area, I am inclined to believe that all investigations/inquests into this matter were not as thorough as they could have been

BINGO! @wiseguy182 - this is exactly what I think happened.

No one saw her out shopping that day, how do we even know she left the building? I think that the killer may have either: lived in her building or was visiting someone in the apartment complex; or was a private contractor with the building, thus gaining access via the secure lot.

If I were LE I would have focused a lot of attention on residents of the apartment complex who fit the description of the killer, the car, and also people who had visitors on that day. Most apartment complexes with underground parking lots have video cameras. If The Kim's complex had cameras, were the videos checked?

you get the feeling if su ya was blonde white and of wealth this story would be real big. asians rarely make mainstream headlines in america.

i wonder how the dad and sons are doing now? the kids must be thirty now. do they still have a drive to have this case solved?

Do we know how far the shopping mall was from where Su lived?

I think the abduction from her parking garage makes the most sense.

Possibly as always the media picks and chooses especially today who they want to cover and it is always based on ratings to push ad sales. For this reason I'm glad that UM took on so many diverse cases in all locations of the country. They did a phenomenal job appealing to all citizens. I think the family went to South Korea. I wonder if there is a way to find them but I'd Imagine that they wanted privacy and a feeling of peace and security that was lost with the abduction and murder.

This Su-ya Kim segment was especially creepy. The security guard patrolling the area late at night obviously saw the murderer & even talked to him, before he realized what had happened. And by the time he did, the killer had left.

Not surprised that this case has never been solved. It took place in NYC in the early '90's, and the killer probably either just disappeared into the huge population of the city - or left the area.

It's notable that this UM segment is one of the handful of times I've seen an actor/actress that later became more well-known. In this case, Daniel Dae Kim portrayed the brother of Su-ya's husband (though he had no speaking parts). Later, Kim was in 200X's TV shows like Lost & 24 (two of my favorite series).

I was randomly thinking about this case today and cannot shake the feeling that this could have been a hate crime. You do not stab someone 9 times if you intend to rob them. Nor would you go through the trouble to dump them in a dimly lit alley. If this was a jilted admirer, you wouldn't think this person would have dumped her body as if she were literal garbage. The fact that she was stabbed 9 times, undressed, and dumped in a dumpster makes me lean more towards a hate crime.

Most hate crimes are spur of the moment crimes of opportunity where the victim(s) are typically located where they were attacked / killed.

I've speculated previously that the white male in "boating" attire witnessed by the security guard may have been LISK. The license plate taken down by the security guard was from a Taiwanese exchange student who attended CW Post College on Long Island, a 40 minute drive due North from Gilgo Beach.

James Byrd and Matthew Shepard are two that come to mind immediately about being taken away from where they were initially abducted and murdered.

The problem with Su Ya's case is that we have no idea if she planned on driving her car or using public transportation for her shopping trip. Because the car being found untouched in the parking garage could be a red herring.

I believe there’s a connection between Jones and the killer. What kind of officer takes a bribe like that? It’s not normal. I believe Jones possibly knew who was responsible but kept quiet about it, or perhaps was even involved himself in the crime. Took a bribe from his buddy to stay quiet. And I believe it was more money then Jones claimed.

absolutely, whoever did this, has a hatred and disregard for women..which is such a problem in this world.
