As to “Bridget,” the story went that it was controversial at the time, and rerunning it, even on weekends, could raise a red flag. Decades did a Binge of every episode (a one season show) about 5 years ago; I recorded the first 2 eps.

Whereas I realize that most of us here are likely over 50, and reminisce about how things were….there’s also the matter of a show being “dated.” The jokes wouldn’t resonate now, and if a rerun keeps rerunning, it WILL run out of gas.
Topical humor doesn’t last.

It amazed me that Decades ran “Laugh-in” as long as it did. There was one of those on-screen text jokes during The Party scene about Averell Harriman. Who? you say? There ya go.

Even in 1983 when Miami’s channel 39 debuted a few months earlier, they had 30-minute Laugh-in shows. A 1968 ep had Dan Rowan reading “1988, News of the Future, 20 Years from Now……U.S. President Ronald Reagan—“ and the crowd burst with laughter. Who knew??

As I myself too would like to see Room 222, which lasted more than a year, it likely would be considered “camp” today—unintentional humor. Schools just aren’t like that today.

Decades would often preface a show by explaining what years it ran, and the significance of the show. Decades was an ambitious project, and when Weigel swapped it out for StartTV on the CBS O&O’s like my local WFOR, I wasn’t thrilled. Oh well.

Funny thing with Bridget Loves Bernie is that it was canceled even with having good ratings since people couldn't accept a mixed religion marriage. Yet All in The Family ran at the same time and was even more controversial than Bridget Loves Bernie.

If the show were in reruns somewhere then weekends would work best. Actually with most all of the shows we've listed could run on a rotating bases on weekends. As someone mentioned they do The Paul Lynde Show and Lotsa Luck on weekends as well as My Mother the Car and It's About Time. With the Paul Lynde Show they didn't even have the complete series to show.

Laugh-In still runs overnights on Catchy Comedy. Yes many of the jokes are dated. It's now a humorous history class. Some of the jokes and visual references are truly inappropriate but somehow are still shown. I'm thinking some of the Black Face, and tribal references. Yet there are other topics that to amaze me to still be running. At the very least there should be a disclaimer on those episodes. And yes, President Regan predicted that far back. That was something.

Decades TV had an interesting vision which ended up morphing into a rerun station. The references to the decade each show ran and its significance was helpful. Plus the old commercials were fun to watch again. Here in NYC metro area we too got stuck with Start TV probably a year or so later Decades TV resurfaced on a different channel. I was thrilled with it returning.

I think the question was more nuanced. Orthodox Jews, in particular, were criticizing that the issues were being discussed in a cavalier way:

Quote:
The program treats intermarriage in a cavalier, cute, condoning fashion, and deals with its inevitable problems as though they're instantly, easily solvable.
https://www.nytimes.com/1973/02/07/a...sh-groups.html

It's a very common dynamic:

Producer: "We're putting on this show to start a dialogue about this issue."
Audience: "This is what we think."
Producer: "CENSOR...BIGOT...(take your pick)."

Getting briefly off of sitcoms, yet still talking classic TV, a genre you don’t see in reruns anymore is….

Medical dramas.

When was the last time we saw Ben Casey, Dr. Kildare, or even the 7-season Medical Center with Chad Everett? Cozi TV did have Marcus Welby for a few months, but I assume that the response was lukewarm.

Heck….where’s ER now??? That was awards city, was it not?

Constant advances in medicine make shows like the above totally camp.

So like I said before, with sitcoms, one has to think about how the humor would resonate now.

Some shows, I feel, made it an absolute point NOT to make topical references that would go over the head of viewers a generation later. Personally I think “The Bob Newhart Show” did an excellent job of staying fresh, even to today.

Believe it or not, there was a time when California was a red state, and Reagan had a lot of older Republican celebrity friends. So predicting that Reagan would eventually become President in the 80's, was hardly a stretch. It wouldn't even be a big shocker, if some of the cast of Laugh-In also voted for him.

I agree. You don’t see St. Elsewhere or Trapper John, M.D. much anymore either

Doc (the MTM sitcom)
Arnie
Phyllis
Flo
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
We Got it Maid
Nanny and the Professor
Doris Day Show
The Mother’s In-Law
Wait til Your Father gets Home

Just to name a few.
Seems to me many of these with limited runs are better suited for Decades, errr, Catchy's weekend marathons than a regular schedule spot.

Oh yeah, St. E!

Sorry to steer OT there.

With AntennaTV standing pat, what else can be said? **Shrug**

One could say that the one thing dated about The Bob Newhart Show is the seeming insensitivity to mental illness that wouldn’t work today….however the character patients were likable (even Mr. Carlin), and Bob did his best to help.

Talking about Laugh-In and Medical Center, I agree that these shows tend to be dated, Laugh-In because of the topical humor that was relevant at the time, and Medical Center because of the changes in medicine in the 50 or so years since the series originally aired.

But I still enjoy watching these shows because of the nostalgia, it's like meeting up with an old friend and finding out things are still the same, I guess that's why the classic shows are called comfort TV.

And from an acting and visual viewpoint, I also prefer classic shows over the current ones.

Pretty much this. I watch these shows almost as much as for a history lesson as to get a chuckle. But being born in 1959, I can do that.

There will come a time when viewers will be leaving in droves, due to the age gaps.

Decades approached classic TV IMO in a way that younger ppl might take an interest. Now that’s gone.

How many watched TV Land when it began? It was pretty much MeTV 28 years earlier. I think that TVL left that classic attitude WAYYYY too fast, but it’s possible that they could see that the old stuff wouldn’t work forever. (Myself not having cable/sat, I was n/a.)

Some very short-lived shows from some big-time sitcom makers: Good Morning, World (which had a run on Antenna), Hey, Landlord, My World and Welcome to It.

That's why, IMO, in 5-7 years (assuming it's still around), Antenna TV will look totally different, particularly at times they air the oldest shows.

Around 15-20 years ago, TV Land (back when it was good) attempted to give interesting facts about the upcoming show, which might have generated interest. This was when the Viacom networks could take a little time to do innovative bumpers. Now any non-program time must be ads or promos.

Mike Lutton

Hi, just wanted to ask you a question. You said antenna tv has said they are not changing their schedule for Spring. I was wondering if there was any mention of the Summer Schedule or Fall Changes Coming?

I do agree antenna tv needs some fresh programming. Although look at Bachelor Father ever since it has Returned it hasn’t received an Evening & Primetime & LateNight airring, in addition they haven’t allowed the show to have a Marathon now if it’s along the lines of limited episodes they could of had a Father of all Fathers Marathon for Fathers Day. Airring Bachelor Father 12:00AM-5:00AM While Father Knows Best 5:00AM-5:00AM for the 2023 Fathers Day Marathon stunt.
