I've been watching the show chronologically on MeTV, and we're on season two. Right now there's a patch of shows with this Lafe Crick character showing up quite a bit, and I have to say I don't enjoy his character at all. Most of his plotlines revolve around him wanting to dig in the backyard for Jed's money, which is where he thinks he keeps it for some reason.
Even this early in the show's run, I notice there's a lot of inconsistency in the quality. Some shows are classic and funny, others are weak. These Lafe Crick episodes fall into the latter category for me. |

I agree. I didn’t even finish the episode where he brought his son out to marry Elly May.

He was a horrible character. That kind of character just didn't fit. If I recall correctly, didn't they even bring him back in a later season?

But the actor who played Lafe (Peter Whitney) appeared on Petticoat Junction in 1 episode as a character named Jasper Tweedy. Jasper was loud and obnoxious like Lafe. |

Lafe was okay with me.
For a nine-season show, there’ll always be a swing-and-a-miss every now and then. I never cared for Jethrine. Not only unfunny, but “she”-and-mother-Pearl scenes never seemed to be part of the actual plot when they’re on. cd |

This is just my opinion, but I don't think I've ever seen another sitcom with such wild swings in quality. One episode it's classic, well written, iconic comedy. And the next it's cartoonish, doltish, and childish.
