Dear Bob Iger,
I have a proposal for Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment: to issue and release (as 20th Century Studios Home Entertainment), for the first time EVER on Blu Ray, "Doogie Howser, M.D.: The Complete Series," showcasing all 97 half-hour episodes of the hit '80s Hospital Drama "Doogie Howser, M.D." 100% Complete, 100% Uncut, AND 100% Unedited, just the way that each episode originally aired on the ABC Television Network, lovingly sourced from the original ABC Television Network prints of each episode. Created by Steven Bochco, "Doogie Howser, M.D." originally aired on ABC from September 19, 1989 - March 24, 1993 for 4 seasons of 97 episodes; a Hospital Drama, the show centered on the home and work life of a teenage doctor, Dr. Douglas Howser (Neil Patrick Harris), a 2nd-year Resident at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Like most teenagers, despite being a child prodigy, Douglas still lived with his parents: dad David (James B. Sikking), also a Medical Doctor, and mom Katherine (Belinda Montgomery), a housewife who later became a patient advocate at Eastman where her son and husband worked. Other principal characters included Douglas's Hospital Colleagues, including Dr. Jack McGuire (Mitchell Anderson), Nurse Curly Spaulding (Kathryn Layng), and Hospital Chief of Services Dr. Ben Canfield (Larry Pressman), as well as Douglas's best friend & childhood neighbor, Vincent "Vinny" Delpino (Max Casella), an aspiring filmmaker who represented to Douglas the average teenage world of which Douglas sadly missed out on, along with Douglas's girlfriend, Wanda Plenn (Lisa Dean Ryan), and Vinny's girlfriend, Janine Stewart (Lucy Boryer) and Hospital Orderly Raymond Alexander (Markus Redmond). According to Steven Bochco in the first-season DVD Bonus Features from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment (which issued the show in Season sets on DVD from 2005-2006), it took a nationwide search to find the right kid actor to portray "Doogie Howser" before Neil Patrick Harris auditioned & got the job. Also, though not exactly based on a true story, the title character of "Doogie Howser" WAS, however, based on a real person who, around age 15, became the youngest person to ever earn his Medical Degree; unlike the title character played on TV by Neil Patrick Harris, the real-life "Doogie Howser" DID NOT use his Medical Degree to practice Medicine in a Hospital--heck, even if he wanted to, he legally couldn't due to being uninsurable in case of a Medical Malpractice lawsuit if it had happened--but rather for Cancer Research, and apparently in recent years became a College Professor. After ABC abruptly cancelled "Doogie Howser" in 1993 due to poor ratings, the Series Finale was telecast on March 24, 1993, during which episode Doogie & Vinnie decided to spend a year in Rome, where Doogie, after Resigning from Medicine, decided to launch a new Chapter as a Professional Writer while Vinny began a new life pursuing his own filmmaking dreams. Tentatively, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment shall issue and release "Doogie Howser, M.D.: The Complete Series" on Blu Ray at ONLY $59.99 wherever DVDs are sold. Sincerely, Steve Arino |
