Me too! I think Chano was one of the most interesting characters on Barney Miller. He had a strong sense of right and wrong, fierce pride in himself and his work, and took his work very seriously. On the other hand, he also loved to have fun (he loved to go dancing) and had a great sense of humor. It sure would've been interesting to see Chano's character grow as the seasons went on.

You and me. He blended well with the cast and it only seemed normal to have a Puerto Rican detective on the squad since this was New York. What a great role model Chano was even though this was a comedy show.

ok, I'll ask once again......why did he leave?
Was it to do A.E.S. Hudson Street? And when that failed, he wasn't offered a chance to go back to BM?

I've never been quite able to find out exactly why he left. Between the time AES was cancelled and he landed the role of El Puerco on Soap (about a 2 1/2 year span), he did several films and a couple of episodics. I agree with Irene that Chano was a great role model. He was indeed.

Sorry Jude, I never knew why he was no longer on Barney Miller. I may have read abt it somewhere back in the days, but I can't recall. It would be nice to know the details. I thought for sure my salt sister would know, but it seems even she is not sure. I guess us three will have to find out that from somewhere.

Yes, we'll have to find out...and find a valid address to write him a letter!! My philosophy is that there are no problems in life, just solutions. It's just sometimes really hard finding the solutions!!

Cool

You guys are going to love this - just today, I saw him on an episode of Magnum P.I. - and he actually punched out Tom Selleck!!! The name of the episode is "Pleasure Principle", aired in Season 8, and is now on DVD.

^ Irene, you're going to love this - in this episode he went into a (brief) Spanish speaking rant while in a nightclub as "Conga" by Miami Sound Machine blared in the background. That's when he decked Magnum.

I don't know if you watched these movies, SELENA and MY FAMILY/MI FAMILIA, but the same actors appear in each movie. Well, not all, but just abt. I can post at least 5 hispanic movies and I bet you they will have the same hispanic actors in them.
He DID play a woman...sort of. I'm talking about the Season 2 ep, "Heat Wave", when Chano, Wojo and Fish dressed in drag to go on park detail. He actually didn't look too bad in a dress. On the other hand, he wore a pretty ugly wig.

Since my birthday is coming up in a few minutes, why don't one of you gift-wrap Gregory Sierra and send him to my house? Please???

Oh me too, he was fantastic as Volta the Gypsy. He is a really good actor. That was one of my favorite episodes of the Waltons. I remember it first run watching it as a kid, and I will watch that ep everytime it comes on the Hallmark channel if I am home! Gregory was HOT as a Gypsy man!
