With the kind of money they won, they can set up a nice annuity or something that will keep them comfortable the rest of their lives, and then spend some on "fun" things. I really don't see a lot of problems with that. |

Yeah, people make bad decisions, but we gotta respect their rights to have their own individual priorities, don't we?
I have some fairly lavish plans if I ever win big big big. Foremost, there is this "conservation club" here that really is a hunting club, that inflicts a considerable toll on the local wildlife population. If I won big my first act would be to buy that property, pay-off ALL the members to forfeit their memberships, and then turn the grounds into a wildlife refuge...no hunting, no fishing, and likely even an endowment to set up a trust for a grounds keeper/attendant to shoo away any stubborn sportsmen who don't obey signs. Total waste, right? except I feel that I'd be accomplishing something worthwhile Oh, there'd be a few things that I'd splurge on just for me, as well But dying rich isn't very high on my list. Who was that famous New York lawyer who boasted he wanted to die flat broke and a million dollars in debt to the IRS? Perhaps Babalu might remember. |

Well, good for him. Me, I wouldn't do that but that's his choice.

I personally hate reading someone winning a huge lottery winning like this. It isnt because of the money or the luxuries, it is that person is free. Free from employment which eats up so much of our lives, or just the worry about having enough resources to continue living their life, and that they no longer have to worry about their health so much, if they get sick, just go to a hospital and get the best medical care.
For myself, I would travel to most of the World. I would be gone for a long time. So many places I want to go I have never been and want to see and experience. I have never been to Europe, the land of my ancestors. To just be able to wake up in the morning and ask myself, what do I want to do today? Just total and absolute freedom. Winners of the lottery are paroled from life itself. It doesnt matter the price of gasoline. For this guy, Gasoline could be $30 a gallon. Eggs can be $100 a dozen. It doesnt matter. Just freedom from that. I could not say where I would live, in America, a place where marijuana was legal. I wouldnt buy a $25 million dollar house because I wouldnt need that. Maybe a five bedroom home, a nice kitchen with all appliances, a room with a large screen to watch films and watch football games. A sauna, a hot tub and a pool. I am a big pinball enthusiast and would probably have a game room filled with favorite pinball machines and be able to go to pinball events, sales and conventions. I would also spend my money on things that protect children, women and a lesser extent families. I would be amiss to be sitting on $500 MILLION dollars after taxes and not help people. As some of you know, I am far from liberal, but I would give back and I would. I wish the lottery was set up after it hit a certain amount it would split off and there are more than one winning number so that more than one person can win the mother load. Why not give a hundred people $10 million dollars? Not that they would know what to do with it. My father worked from poverty and an alcoholic father in his childhood and amassed about $1.5 million dollars in his lifetime and he is very content, he lives in a nice home in the suburbs, does not have to worry about health care costs and can do what he likes. He is 90 now, but even if he was 60, cant imagine what he would do differently if he would have won this besides maybe buy more airplanes (he is a retired airline pilot who has a young man, flew the DC-3, a war horse of an aircraft. I asked him once if he would like to have one as a toy and he perked up as a child by reasoned that the fuel, although he could afford it would be expensive and impractical. He doesnt need the World. That is about me. I want to wake up and be free, smoke pot, be with my wife, travel and have experiences, play with my Iphone and Ipad and just live a free life before death. For me, I want to live a free life and be with my wife, and give her absolutely anything she wants. I would have some luxuries, like I said, a nice, reasonable home (maybe four bedrooms, a kick ass kitchen and a pool/hot tub/sauna) but I dont need the Taj Mahal. I would end up giving away a lot of money to worthy causes, especially to my children and babies and the parents who need a helping hand to get out of the ****. |

I was honestly more happy as a kid, with no money to my name, reading from a stack of worthless, coverless comic books that cost less than 3 cents each. Now I'm constantly dealing with the IRS, I've waited 13 months for a deceased family member's refund of over $2,000; I have to file estimated taxes 4 times per year both with Fed and Indiana. I'm constantly writing checks to keep up.
Then there are the substandard doctors, the greedy funeral homes, Medicare statements up to 16 pages in length, lousy insurance companies, fee-happy banks, etc. I have to deal with upkeep of the house, my brother's family members expect expensive birthday and Christmas gifts, my overseas relatives expect greeting cards with checks enclosed, the list goes on. My life was better way back when my allowance was 50 cents per week, and my parents took care of pretty much everything. You can dream of having things, but it may manifest itself in more of a nightmare. |

One vanity item that I likely would pursue would be to build identical houses in Key West Florida as well as on the shores of Lake Superior in the U.P. Maybe $3 million price range each. identically furnished, and then live in the southern estate during winter, and move to the northern for summer.
I'd probably go with a "gilded era" design, turrets in the corners, etc. |

Regarding funeral arrangements, my Greek Orthodox Christian religion does not permit cremation as an option. It's burial only. What gripes me is that I've paid for date engraving on my parents' marker, as the funeral home people also now own the cemetery -- and as of more than a year later, the space was still blank. I have to drive down there and likely find that still nothing has been done. And a cross was stolen off of their vigil light, to go with a missing (stolen) cherub off of my grandparents' tombstone.
But just to get the thread back on topic, if people think coming into money will transform their lives, they are correct -- but not everything will be a bed of roses for them. Responsibilities may increase like mad. Money's greater gift is security. As someone said recently, when you die you can't hitch a U-Haul full of your stuff to the back of the hearse. |

If I won that kind of money, I would give some to my family to make sure they are set for the rest of their lives. Then I would move and own properties in places like Lofoten Islands, Cirque de Gavarnie, Coastal Algarve. Invest in some real estate around the globe.
