Default Hot vs. Not

It's likely the product of my advancing years, but it's amazing how many actresses I see in old shows and movies, who I never before "appreciated" for their physical attributes, who today present a never before seen appeal.

The day I found Endorra to be hormone stirring was particularly unsettling. Louise Latham was another, but with her it was more of a fetish, she always presents herself so prim and proper, that my attraction was mostly to make her more mortal.

But another who caught me by surprise in an old Andy Griffith show, as the battling housewife, is Claudia Bryar. She is in a Gunsmoke rerun I'm currently watching, and IMO, is smoking hot..

I guess one aspect of growing old, the middle age gals who looked like old hags when I was a kid, now look like a young "catch" to these older sensitivities.

Anybody else have actresses/actors who you only found attractive much later in (your) life?

I find it interesting shows I watched from childhood and thought then the women to be old (and they were, old enough to be my mother) who in my 50's see as attractive now since the actresses are now younger than me. Examples (and I dont know all the names, excuse that).

Linda Lavin, especially on Barney Miller. In one episode, she came in hot and sweating, and went, that is a nice looking woman.

Lynn Hamilton who played Donna on Sanford and Son was attractive and nice. Fred sort of treated her badly. She is still alive at 91. Like the MTM show (explained below) the characters were actually seen as older than their characters, which is somewhat rare in TV and movies (with an exception to Ed Asner of MTM below whose character was a WWII veteran when he was only 15 when the war ended, maybe the age deflation only applied to women, except for Vivian Vance as Ethel....which I wasnt going to add but an after thought in my edit.)

Vivian Vance. She was a beautiful young woman. She looks to me a lot like Kaley Cuoco on Big Bang Theory. It is widely known but on I Love Lucy she was seen as older than Lucy married to an old William Frawley who was old enough to be her father, being 22 years older.

Barbra Barrie who played Barney Miller's wife on the show. I wouldnt call her "sexy" bBarbaraut she was an attractive middle aged woman. I am in my 50's and like women my own age. She was probably in her 40's in this. There is even an episode where Barney wants to get out and get home for a romantic dinner and sex and cant get away.

Barbra Bosson on Hill Street Blues. She was physically attractive but was sort of nuts and needy.

Eva Gabor, Green Acres. I saw some random episodes online and went wow, this is a beautiful lady wth a sexy voice. She was so cute.

Jane Curtain. I watched SNL when I was a child and she just seemed so old. I think her accent sort of added to that. Now I see clips of SNL or pictures of her and went, that was an attractive young woman. (I also thought as a child Steve Martin was elderly since he had white hair).

Georgia Franklin who played Georgette on Mary Tyler Moore. She was young, in her twenties, but for some reason (to me) the female characters seemed so old, because I think the clothing they wore. I would have liked to have seen Georgia "vamped up", looking modern 70's. Tight jeans, a halter top, crazy hair and a girl wanting to party, sitting on a dude's shoulders at a Steely Dan concert. There is an episode on MTM (dunno which one) where her hair and clothing was more 1970's. When she was on Everybody Loves Raymond as an actual older middle aged woman, I wanted to go, baby, you have been that since your youth.

I will even add Mary Tyler Moore and Valarie Harper in this mix. Especially Mary seemed so old then, but she was only in her 30's. Jason Bateman now is old enough to be Mary's father when her show began. Val and Mary, put on some jeans and go to a concert. Even Valarie/Rhoda who was sort of hippie, just dressed old. But I also blame the era, the 1970's were an awful decade for fashion, but here they had some attrative women with nice figures to sell it.

Lastly, Barbra Billingsley on Leave it to Beaver. A much different era. She was a beautiful woman, and a beautiful older woman on the 1980's revival show. I had a good high school friend who once told me that he could never envision her and Ward having sex. But in an episode of the series in the kitchen, Ward hugs her from behind and kisses the back of her neck. So yes, they did it.

Claudia had quite a pretty face. I particularly like how she looks in this little photo, beautiful:

That's a good one. I look at her now and wonder :why did I never before find her attractive?"

She's not glamorous, but she's got a certain something that goes "zing".

Agree on Claudia Bryar, and she was all over the place on 60s TV. Then there's Tina Cole from My Three Sons, and my oft-mentioned Beverly Garland. Marjorie Reynolds was probably a very good looking woman when she was younger than all her 50s and 60s appearances.

I remember Georgia Engel from MTM, and later Everybody Loves Raymond. Never thought much about her, but I really think Patricia Heaton is hot.

Never thought much about Agnes Moorehead, but yes on Elizabeth Montgomery!

Then there's Whitney Blake, who looked good on Hazel, but never looked better than on her Andy Griffith appearance.

And on it goes...

Whichever moderator/admin who moved this thread to the general siitcoms board has done so in error. Bryar (and a host of other potential candidates) co-starred in dramas as well as sitcoms, so by your decision to move it here to this narrow(er) perspective venue, you are limiting potential responses.

Inappropriate moderation IMO. Please PM me with the identity of whichever member who complained about the thread, so that I can flame them.

It's destined that every man reach an age when he thinks, "That Rue McClanahan isn't a bad looking woman."

It wasn't reported. I didn't move it. I did edit your original title of "Hot, vs.Not". It looked a little odd with a comma next to the word Hot and no spacing. I hope you didn't mind me cleaning it up a little bit for you.

I can see why it was moved because it mentions a number of sitcom actresses. People can still find it with the redirect.

I would prefer general television threads which cover multiple genres be posted on General Sitcoms or one of the other television boards. Threads like Famous People Currently in Their 90s, Older Actors Who Outlived Their Younger Co-stars and Actors you are surprised by their age are better fits for the General board. Chit Chat is more for non-television related threads.

I did move the Early cable tv thread. It did ok on Chit Chat and had a decent number of replies and views, but I'm not sure if it would have generated many more responses there. I thought it would get additional replies and views on the General board, which is exactly what happened. Not everyone visits Chit Chat. There are some members who rarely venture off the General board.

I would say Ann B. Davis. She looked real nice when she was dolled up with her hair and makeup in one of the episodes.

Perhaps you might consider "generalizing" the heading of this particular subforum then,... so it reflects your strategy? And I'm not saying that just to be difficult. I seriously would have second thoughts about putting this thread in this subforum, out of concern some mod would object that I inappropriately placed a drama topic in a venue specific to sitcoms. I now have reservations that people responding to this thread might be tempted to exclude drama actresses due to the venue the thread is in.

This is a real issue to the extent that sometimes I believe the moderators make decisions without properly understanding what the poster's strategy is for a given thread. They are obviously not mind readers, but perhaps they might do well to remind themselves of this before making uninformed decisions?

I've had other threads moved in the past where I just sort of tongue in cheek thought OHH-KAYY....realizing that under one train of thought perhaps the moderator had a logical point, (despite them having no way of knowing my eventual strategy for the thread),.. but I really don't believe that to be the case in this instance.

Alternately, had I originally placed the thread in this subforum, I really would have expected admonishment asking "what about the word sitcom do you not understand"?

General Sitcoms is full of threads that discuss more than just sitcoms and includes dramas. It doesn't say you must only discuss sitcoms here.

I don't see any reason to rename it. This is the first board listed. It's going to be the first one people usually look at for general television news and discussion. There's always going to be some threads which overlap sitcoms, dramas, etc.

I thought your thread title was a little bit clickbait-ish. It might have been better to use a more descriptive title such as "Do you have any actresses/actors who you only found attractive much later in (your) life?" or something similar. You didn't even receive your first response for nearly two days. I'm not sure if people would have known what it was about. Vague titles are one of the main reasons why some threads fail to generate any replies.

Chit Chat has always been for the off-topic threads that don't fit anywhere else.

Last night on the DVD I watched a Perry Mason episode, an episode from season 9 titled The Case Of The Midnight Howler, there's an actress in the episode named Myrna Fahey, I am not familiar with her and hadn't seen her before, but as I watched the episode I was thinking, wow she's a good looking woman . Was sad to learn though that she passed away at age 40 which is far too young.

Hi Jim, I'm the one who moved it. It really came down to whether or not it was TV-related. I can understand it making sense on Chit Chat, but I think it really makes more sense on the General board. Something I've learned over the years is that General Sitcoms transcends its literal meaning due to how many people visit this board first (or only) and the fact the site is called Sitcoms Online. It's more of a general TV discussion, with emphasis on, but not exclusive to, sitcoms. Still, any specifically drama-related topics would belong on the Drama boards.
