I've been watching old variety shows and see all around entertainers. I'm talking about people like Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett, Ken Berry, Sammy Davis Jr., and Jim Nabors. They all could act, sing, dance, narrate. They may have even had a hand in writing and directing. All have been in sitcoms as well.
Who else would you consider an "all around entertainer"? And who would be the last one. For last one I'm thinking Neil Patrick Harris. |

Drew Carey enthusiastically inserted music into his show. Not sure how effective he was.

Jack Benny, Danny Thomas, Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason. I'd also say Lucille Ball but you have to be able to sing a song. That was a standing joke on her sitcom but I still don't think she was known for singing.

I wonder when this form of entertaining ended or at least became limited? Years ago you pretty much had to do it all to survive in show business.

Well Lucy's joke on singing matched Jack Benny's violin playing.

So who on this list we created who was the best?
Dick Van Dyke Carol Burnett Ken Berry Jim Nabors Sammy Davis Jr Drew Carey Jack Benny Danny Thomas Bob Hope Jackie Gleason Lucille Ball Neil Patrick Harris and I'll add Mary Tyler Moore and Danny Kaye to the list. I'm thinking either Dick Van Dyke or Danny Thomas Was there anyone else? |
