Default Monster Earthquake Hits Turkey & Syria

Thousands die and sounds like more will be found dead in the rubble.

What amazes me about the pictures is the way entire buildings have been reduced to rubble.

Quakes here in the US you see significant damage, entire walls fall down and roofs collapse, but you see many portions that remain intact despite the damage.

Over there now you see entire blocks where all buildings have been turned into piles of stone

Inferior building codes I imagine?

The "old country" is old and buildings are not strong to withstand EQ's...We had a couple bldgs just fall here during the last EQ, the bldgs were old and brick. No modern retrofitting.

Most Third World countries have no "building codes".

What we would consider a once in a century disaster is commonplace for them.

I visited Greece eight years before their 1981 earthquake, and 11 years after. The rebuilding was done with massive amounts of concrete, so I saw firsthand the replaced structures (including my close relatives') were far superior to what was destroyed.

Still though, I think Babalu is right; building codes may be weak to non-existent -- but a # of stories limit may be imposed. (There was an Athens developer in recent years who wanted to put up a tall building that was opposed -- for one thing, it would've ruined views of the Acropolis.)

Sounds almost as though someone would be doing them a favor if they went in and preemptively bulldozed all those primitive buildings down, and built schools in their place?

You make it s ound like it's an easy piece of cake for the old countries to do.

Supposedly latest number of deaths. How they can even get this number in all the rubble.

There is one country over in the middle east happily bulldozing heirloom homesteads of their declared rivals , under the auspices of furthering "education",....so I just thought I'd show Babalu that I'm paying attention.

What my obtuse friend is alluding to is that Israel bulldozes the homes of suicide bombers in order to lessen the incentive to do such a heinous act. Many of you may not know that the terrorists such as the palestinian authority and hezbollah pay families of suicide bombers then of thousands of dollars after they blow themselves up. Some families talk their own children into becoming suicide bombers to profit off it. Interestingly enough, many arab countries fund these palestinian terrorists to keep killing Israelis but not one of these arab countries will take the palestinians in, even tough they have plenty of room for them.

LOL, there was just something about your use of the word "commonplace" that I found inspiring.

Magnitude 7.8. Very large! I experienced both the 1971 Sylmar and 1994 Northridge earthquakes. Both magnitude 6.7.

Last figures I've heard is over 22,000 have perished and live people being pulled out
of rubble...so so tragic for those people.
