I thought it was OK. I'll see how it develops over this first half-season.
Liked Laroquette as Dan, interesting that he's now a widower and a recluse who comes back as the public defender. Melissa Rauch was pretty good, channelling Harry Anderson's Judge character in her own way, but we'll see how things progress. Like most new shows, it has to find its way and it usually takes a first season to work things out, like the original show. |

I really hope this show can succeed, I was a big fan of the original.
I've seen the first two episodes, and the humor seems really strained. If they don't develop some chemistry soon, I don't think this reboot has a big future. |

After just two episodes I felt the jokes were predictable and the laugh track sounded like it was recorded through a funnel.

Well, the original show went through some cast changes the first few seasons so it would not be unreasonable for the reboot to do the same.

I have to admit, the original show has not aged well for me.
Loved it back in the day, but the reruns don't have the same effect on me anymore. But I'll see how this show develops in its first half-season. Like most sitcoms, the first season usually isn't the best one. We shall see. |

It took about four seasons for the original show to have a stable cast going forward (Harry, Dan, Bull, Christine, Mac, and Roz).

The Night Court Revival's Biggest Pitfall May Be the Humor of the Original
The original Night Court was a product of its time. If the new series can avoid cheap laughs, it could match or even surpass its predecessor. |

Having now seen all 3 episodes of the reboot, there is something seriously "off" in the basic fabric of this show. I believe it is more serious than just "shifting senstivities" Fielding doesn't seem believable as a defender, the Judge is not self assured enough, and the laugh track seems poorly calibrated. How long before Jamie Pressly and Kristen Johnston are recruited to resuscitate this series?

I liked the first two episodes. Episode three wasn't as good.

NBC in the 1980s renewed shows that initially had bad ratings, like Cheers, and Family Ties, because execs like the late Grant Tinker and the late Brandon Tartikoff saw that these shows had a certain quality to them and gave them a chance to find their audience. I don't know what the original Night Court's ratings were, but they were either pretty good or someone at the network gave them a chance based on the potential they saw in the show. That kind of thing doesn't happen anymore in our one miliion channels, streaming, instant gratification time we live in now. |

The sarcastic, angry wit is still there, but I would think a little bit of the old letch would have resurfaced. People change somewhat as they get older, but some things never change. |

John Larroquette's Night Court Return Confirms He's the MVP of Any Sitcom
John Larroquette is returning to his most famous role as Dan Fielding in NBC's Night Court, but his career in TV comedy shows no signs of waning. |

Fielding's dearth of principles, imo, is part of the humor of him being prosecutor, just doesn't have the same dynamic as a defender.
They should replace the bailiff with the harsh old guy from B-Positive who went on the road trip with Drew (perhaps with a thick eastern european accent) Put Jaimie Pressly into the court reporter's position, and the eccentric black lawyer from Seinfeld as the public defender. That's my strategy. |
