Wouldn't his family have had to have some money for him to do that?

It was the Depression. He never tells the kids that they can get scholarships for college like he did, so I would think his family had to have some kind of coin.

Right, he never talked about working his way thru college. But, since it was called State, maybe it was run by whatever state they were in, and he got a reduced in-state tuition.
