When the family arrives at the college, there is writing on the screen telling the viewer "State College".

Then we see a normal street on a movie lot. It kind of looks like something from Beaver. But I do not know my studios like others do.

The background looked to me like one of the typical Columbia/Screen Gems streetscapes. Like something you'd also see on Hazel or Dennis the Menace.
