Hi

Season 1 of TBNS had neighbor Margaret. Was the character supposed to develop somehow?

As much as I love TBNS, am I right to believe that the writers wrote her off, because she didn’t seem to be ready to amount to anything positive to the show?

They already had Howard as a neighbor. Maybe that’s all they wanted later on. BTW did Howard ever talk to Margaret at all? I cannot remember—was Margaret married?

Is there more info online about what happened to her being dropped?

Margaret was married to Arthur, played by William Redfield. I think he was only in one scene of one episode. Redfield later returned as Howard's brother, Warden Gordon Borden.

I'm just guessing, but the Bob Newhart Show was structured a lot like The Mary Tyler Moore Show. They may have just started out with two neighbors because MTM had Rhoda and Phyllis, and then decided to grow Howard and drop Margaret.

Thanks all. I was looking at the Moviechat page. I know it was early on, but Margaret just didn’t seem to have a personality that would click. They wanted a Mary/Rhoda-esque camaraderie? Good luck on that, with smart Emily….
