Whats your longest song on a 45 you currently have?? (Or had)

Mine is 'HEY JUDE' by the beatles.... THE ENTIRE 7 Mins and 11 Seconds IS ON THE 45!! (Kind of surprising)


Anyone ever seen a longer one??

Most other long songs are cut down on 45s.

I have a 45 RPM record of American Pie by Don McLean and it's the entire uncut song which runs over 8 minutes. It's a re-issue 45 on the Collectables label.

An interesting thing about 45's is that sometimes the re-issues are better than the original releases. In some cases, the re-issues have the full version of the song while the originals are edited.

"Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas is edited on the 45, and as far as I know, there is no re-issue 45 that has the full version. The full version is only on Kansas "Leftoverture" album.

Lionel Records issued three different variants of "Signs" by the Five Man Electrical Band. One variant has the intro and the end of the song trimmed off. Another variant includes the intro but the ending is cut off. The other variant is the full, unedited song which runs about 4 minutes. The unedited variant is the one that's hardest to find so I'm glad I have a copy.

I ended up having to get import releases of "Lyin' Eyes" by The Eagles, "Dance With Me" by Orleans, and "Love Hurts" by Nazareth, because the import 45's are unedited while the USA releases are edited.

I have hundreds of 45's, most are from the 70's but I also have some from the 50's and 60's. Some of them are obscure, they're good tunes but for whatever reason didn't do well on the charts. All are in good shape and play with good sound.

The 45 edit of Do It Again by Steely Dan, I actually prefer to the unedited version. The edited version cuts an organ solo I can do without. I think the stereo side of the promo 45 is the only place to get the edited version in stereo, since I'm pretty sure the 45 is mono.

I have never owned a record, the music I have is all CDs (and some cassettes but no cassette player anymore).

Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven is an 8 minute song, Atlantic Records eventually issued it as a 45/single but I believe only a limited number of copies were pressed, so if one turns up on ebay it tends to be rather pricey.

It's true that sometimes the 45 is a different mix compared to the album version. One example I can think of is Gerry Rafferty's Right Down The Line. The record company, United Artists, speeded up the song on the 45/single version while the album version plays at a slower tempo.

45's don't always have edited versions of the songs, many times the songs are complete and are the same version that's on the LP/album. In cases where the song on the 45 is edited, the record company sometimes refers to it as a "single edit".

The 45 of Rhiannon times in at about 3:45 while the LP version time length is about 4:10. There's an instrumental part towards the end of the song on the LP that is edited out on the 45, as far as I can tell that is the difference.

The 45 of Say You Love Me doesn't appear to have anything edited from it, but it sounds like it's slightly speeded up compared to the LP version.

It states under the title (Edited from the album K54043 "Fleetwood Mac"). The hit single is RPS1345, master number (UCA5852)S (P) 1976, titled "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)". It's also the edited version but with significant added string overdubs.

I think Say You Love Me just has added overdubs and as you say, speeded slightly.

I listened to both and yes the 45 version has guitar overdubs.

Joe Walsh's Life's Been Good is edited on the 45, the 45 version edits out some of the instrumental passages that drag the song out to about 8 minutes on the LP version.

Yes that's the one I have, Reprise Records 0119, Back To Back Hits. Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win), run time 3:46, and Over My Head, run time 3:17.
