Default One Day at a Time Casts-Per-Episodes List

This is a Casts-Per-Episodes guide for One Day at a Time. I'll have to do it in parts. I'll also try to add episode descriptions and trivia notes later on.

The number next to the actor is their appearance number. I give any guest that has 2 or more appearances their appearance number. But only for the same character. So, if an actor plays three different characters over the course of the show, I only number them for the same character. Howard Morton is an example. He plays quite a few characters but only repeats as Mr. Butterfield. Thus, I number him when he plays that role and that role only.

#1: Ann’s Decision
Original Airdate: December 16, 1975 (CBS)

Written By: Allan Manings, Norman Paul & Jack Elinson
Directed By: Hal Cooper

Opening Credits Cast:
Ann Romano … Bonnie Franklin (1)
Julie Cooper … Mackenzie Phillips (1)
David Kane … Richard Masur (1)
Barbara Cooper … Valerie Bertinelli (1)
Dwayne Schneider … Pat Harrington (1)

Synopsis:
Ann has to make her first big decision since divorcing her husband and moving her and her two teenage daughters to Indianapolis. When Julie wants to go on a co-ed backpacking trip with a few classmates, Ann tells her she can’t go. This causes an argument between mother and daughter until Julie decides to go back to living with her dad. Ann lets her and Julie takes off. Meanwhile, Ann has David Kane, her divorce lawyer, wanting to marry her, the building superintendent, Schneider, constantly hitting on her, and her other daughter Barbara, all excited about making the basketball team - a day in the life of a divorced, liberated woman! In the end, Julie returns, unable to leave her mom and sister. Ann changes her mind and gives her permission to go on the trip, but Julie calls her friend and tells her she’s not allowed.

Footnotes:
- At the start of the series, Ann is selling Avon. However, with a lousy recession, no one is buying. All she was able to sell was one pair of false eyelashes, a lipstick and some eye shadow… to a man.
- Although Schneider becomes a beloved character, a best friend to Ann and a surrogate father to Julie and Barbara, in the pilot, he comes off more as a bit of a sleaze and a pest. He’s even married. However, his wife is not shown and is quietly dropped by the next episode. In future episodes, Schneider will mention having been married, but it’s stated to be many years prior to this pilot episode.
- David works for the law firm of McInerney, Coleman, Wolf & Schwartz.
- Ann calls her ex-husband on the phone. We’ll meet Ed in episode #14.

Classic Quote:

When David asks Ann why them getting married is silly.

Ann: “I’m 34. You’re 26.”

David: “Wait a minute. I’m almost 27. You’re barely 34. Besides, I look at least 29, you don’t look a day over 30, so really, we’re talking about a difference of a couple of months here.”

#2: Chicago Rendezvous
Original Airdate: December 23, 1975 (CBS)

Written By: Perry Grant & Dick Bensfield
Directed By: Don Richardson

Opening Credits Cast:
Ann Romano … Bonnie Franklin (2)
Julie Cooper … Mackenzie Phillips (2)
David Kane … Richard Masur (2)
Barbara Cooper … Valerie Bertinelli (2)
Dwayne Schneider … Pat Harrington (2)

Closing Credits Cast:
Steve Blanchard … Lyman Ward

Footnotes:
- Although broadcast second, this was the fourth episode produced, which was after Mackenzie Phillips cut her hair shorter. There is a bit of a continuity error because in the next two episodes, she has longer hair and then short for the rest of this season. I'd suggest placing this episode fourth, but I don't for one reason. That's due to one simple line from Julie: “Did you trust me last week when I wanted to go backpacking on a mountain with three boys?” This was making a reference to the pilot episode. If that happened “last week”, that would make this the next episode. We just have to overlook, this once, her hair going from long to short back to long and back to short.

#3: Jealousy
Original Airdate: December 30, 1975 (CBS)

Written By: Kevin Hopps
Directed By: Noam Pitlik

Julie Cooper … Mackenzie Phillips (3)
David Kane … Richard Masur (3)
Barbara Cooper … Valerie Bertinelli (3)
Dwayne Schneider … Pat Harrington (3)

Closing Credits Cast:
Candy Caruthers … Carla Borelli
Jeff … Rory Stevens

Footnotes:
- Schneider’s phone number is ALL-LOVE. Translation: 255-5683.
- Episodes #72 and #73 (in the fourth season) are also titled “Jealousy”.

#4: How to Succeed Without Trying
Original Airdate: January 6, 1976 (CBS)

Directed By: Noam Pitlik & Gloria Monty

Opening Credits Cast:
Ann Romano … Bonnie Franklin (4)
Julie Cooper … Mackenzie Phillips (4)
David Kane … Richard Masur (4)
Barbara Cooper … Valerie Bertinelli (4)
Dwayne Schneider … Pat Harrington (4)

Closing Credits Cast:
Pete Holston … Robert Mandan

Original Airdate: January 27, 1976 (CBS)

Written By: Dick Bensfield & Perry Grant
Directed By: Norman Campbell

Opening Credits Cast:

David Kane … Richard Masur (7)
Barbara Cooper … Valerie Bertinelli (7)
Dwayne Schneider … Pat Harrington (7)

Closing Credits Cast:
Ginny … Fritzi Burr
Fred … Don Diamond
Harold … John O’Leary

Footnotes:
- While Ann and Ed were married for seventeen years, Scheider was married for only three weeks. He mentions having been divorced for ten years. However, he had a wife in the pilot, which was just six episodes ago. So, either his past has been retconned or ten years have passed within six episodes. I’m assuming the former.

Okay, now I see what you mean in that it’s like an online episode guide. I do like the color coding of the different seasons.

Not much I can really contribute here with just the names and dates. Maybe when (not if ) you get to the episode descriptions and trivia I can try to help and add things.

A few months ago, I went through the episodes and got this information. That's why I'm able to post these so fast because I already have it on my computer. It's still time consuming to put it on here and make it look all fancy, lol, but I'm glad to finally be doing this.

As soon as I post all nine seasons, I'll begin with the episode descriptions (which I don't already have and will take me quite a while) and trivia per episodes. And yes, I appreciate any help you can give me.

I also want to put these in the best viewing order. For the most part, broadcast order works and I'll leave that. But there are some instances where episodes are clearly out of order and I'll work to place them in better slots.

As for the color coding per seasons, I just see some numbers as colors. And I like putting the titles in those colors. Plus, I think it looks nice and separates the seasons. I'm glad you like it.

For viewing order, even though some occasional inconsistencies can pop up (for this show I’d say mostly in season 7, nothing major though, like say Nick was suddenly back) I still prefer watching in air date order. That’s how it originally ran, and that’s how people first watched it, and that’s how I like to experience it.

I used to be more strict. I'd go with the production order and go from there. The production order isn't always the best either, so I look at it as how I would have aired them originally if I was in charge of that.

I can put it in broadcast order for this guide. Except I already snuck in a change. The episode "It's In the Cards" was produced for season six but didn't air until the end of season seven. Neither Nick or Alex are in the episode, so I guess there's nothing in it that screams it belongs in season six, I just thought it looked weird that all of a sudden everyone looks a year younger, lol. When I post season seven, I'll go ahead and fix that. I'll just mention in the trivia, what I just mentioned here about when it was made versus when it aired. There's also a couple of season seven produced episodes that aired in season eight. But as I'm thinking right now, I can't seem to recall it affecting the story any.

When I'm done with this, I'll make a different thread where I post an episode list of the episodes in the order I think they should be viewed in and keep this thread with the broadcast order since that's technically the official order.

I appreciate your feedback and comments. It makes doing this worthwhile.

Yeah, in season 8, after Barbara and Mark return from their honeymoon, and before Sam first appears, there are some episodes that don’t seem to fit there. After Sam everything seems to be where it should be for the rest of the run.

I remember someone saying this was because of a writers strike (or some kind of strike), but I don’t remember the details. Maybe you do? Or maybe I’m mixing this up with something else.

I don't know anything about that. It sounds right, though.

All the trivia I'm going to add to the episodes will be stuff I look up as I go along.

Okay, I finally have all of the episodes posted. However, I got lazy towards the end for the guest character's appearance numbers. I'll have to go through later and correct them.

Also, Francine Webster has an asterisk in front of her name during the ninth season. That's because Shelley Fabares name was credited in the first scene after the opening credits.

Now, I'll be adding the trivia and episode descriptions from time to time. This will pretty much be a work in progress for a while. 209 episodes and I'm lazy and a procrastinator!

I know you said a lot of the groundwork for this was already laid, but still, getting all this up, sized and colored and posted, in 2 days, is the OPPOSITE of lazy and procrastinating.

Looking above at the list, got reminded that after the wedding and the credit change to Barbara Royer, in the Catcher In The Mud and Aunt Francine credits, which aired after the wedding and honeymoon, she’s back to Barbara Cooper for those two.

I noticed at the end that Valerie missed one episode so I began to look to see which one. I noticed that on episode #170 she is listed as (70) instead of (170) and on #172 she is listed as (171) even though she was (171) in #171. It seems she missed #183.

Since you put so much effort into this I thought you'd probably want to fix it.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll go back and fix it now.

Thank you. I'm kind of surprised I was able to do it so fast. Normally I procrastinate and lose interest or gain interest in something else, so I'll start another project with the intention of going back and forth on both and then finding a third project to do. I have a lot of beginnings with very little endings, lol.

But your interest in this thread helped me, because it kept me focused on getting it done in a timely fashion.

Both of those episodes were originally shot for season 7 but aired in 8. Since they were made for 7 and I was originally going to change the order, placing them in the 7th season before deciding to just keep with the broadcast order, I had changed her last name back to Cooper. I am going back and changing the color for the titles of those misplaced episodes. They can stay put in season 8 but I still see them as season 7 episodes. The same goes for a season 6 episode, which aired at the end of 7. However, the episode "Airport" was shot in 6 and aired in 7, but in that episode, they mention that Alex lives with them. So clearly that episode was intended for season 7 (when he started living with them). So, I'll keep the sienna color for that title because there's no question it's a 7th season episode (despite being produced during the 6th).

Back to speaking of last names, whenever I see a cast list for this show, I always see Ann listed as Ann Romano/Royer. But when I got to the wedding episode, she clearly said she's keeping her last name Romano. So, that's why I didn't change her name for the ninth season. I'm assuming you already knew that, but for those who don't...

Yup, no way is Ann consenting to becoming a Royer.

I always wished it would have stayed Barbara Cooper, in the same sense that after the real life marriage we never got credits saying ‘And Valerie Van Halen as Barbara Cooper’

Footnotes-wise so far I’d say if you’re pointing out some name guest stars I’d make mention of a pre Threes Company Suzanne Somers in Julie’s Job. And in A Visit From Dad, I’d note Beeson Carrol, who plays the policeman, is in the later episode Fear of Success (different character, unless we want to say he quit the force and went into business). Also that Lane Binkley from The Runaways part 3 was Anns epileptic secretary in Ann’s Secretary. Anyways, not criticisms here, just suggestions. Keep up the good work.
