I don't get this either. The K-Mart was approximately an hour north from where the truck and the traps were located. He either killed or incapacitated Diana, drove north to drop Crystal off and then drove back south in the direction where he and Diana were seen checking traps to kill or dump Diana's body and then kill himself. Or, whoever killed Diana and Riemer lived near Tacoma dropped Crystal off at the K-Mart on their way back home.

I wonder what makes the investigator think Mike is guilty? First, I don't see him driving an hour away just to drop his daughter off at K-Mart when he visited his father's house. If you love your child enough to drop them somewhere before killing yourself, then it's makes more sense to leave them with family rather than possibly being kidnapped at K-Mart

Secondly, Diana's death looks like a crime of passion, being stabbed 17 times, while Ruth was shot and decapitated, so I can see how he may think they're unrelated in that sense. But they both had a tube sock, tied in the same manor, wrapped around their necks. So I'm not understanding how he thinks the cases are unrelated.

He thinks Riemer is guilty because of some drug he was taking which had a side effect that could cause rage, in addition to the domestic violence he committed. Plus she was stabbed 17 times, so whoever killed her was in a rage at the time. What doesn't make sense to me is taking her shirt off and using her bra as bindings to tie her hands behind her back.

I mean't to type guilty, not innocent, my bad.

Yeah, her death sounds like it would've been committed by Mike, but like you said the bra being taken off and used doesn't fit in with the rage killing part, it seems like she was also tortured/sexualized in comparison to Ruth who was just shot and decapitated.

So there is a possibility that Mike also killed the other couple. There were no more couple murders after Mike/Diana died afterall.

The detective seems to think Riemer was injured shortly from where Diana's body lay. That strikes me as someone getting to him first, and then going after Diana without knowing the daughter was with them.

I agree, I also believe that Riemers father believe that Mike was attacked first.

The more I read about this case, the less I think Mike did it. Outside of being stabbed 17 times, I don't know why he would take his girlfriends bra off and tie her up with it outside while their daughter was in the car right next to them.

I also have a hard time thinking he would leave her at K-Mart instead of his father's house.

I do believe that the person who killed them could've known one of them intimately. Mike and Diana were separated for a while folliowing Mikes abuse, but there's a possibility that Diana was seeing someone else while her and Mike were broken up, and she dumped him to go back to Mike. Would explain the rage/sexual nature of her killing, as well as Crystal being found at Kmart instead of her grandfather's.

The detective confirmed that she was seeing someone else in that podcast. Also, Riemer was by all accounts an abusive and controlling boyfriend. Would he have needed to strip Diana down and bind her hands together for her to comply with him? Seems unlikely, IMO.

Exactly. Stripping her down like that would've been unnecessary. It seems like whoever stripped and stabbed her seems like they had hatred towards her and wanted to torture/sexualize her. I know that Mike was abusive towards her, but I don't know why he'd do such a thing outside in the cold with their child in the car. Her murder seems to have had some hatred towards her, and if not Mike, then another lover comes to mind. Someone who was hurt by her.

I don't know if the cases are connected. While Ruth's death was vicious, she wasn't stripped and sexualizied like Diana. Just shot and decapitated. I'm wondering if the guy Diana was seeing knew they were going to the woods that day? Only problem would be the tube socks that both victims were found with around their necks. So either the same killer killed both couples, or the tubesock could've been a possible red herring with Diana to fool the authorities into thinking it was the same killer from the other couple

I've been thinking about how the detective said that the Diana/Mike case has no connection to Ruth/Stephen's, but something has been bothering me.

Mike's skull was found a mile from where Diana's body was found, but Mike's skull was found intact with no holes in it. Ruth was found shot in the abdomen and decapitated. Is it safe to assume that Mike was decapitated like Ruth?

I honestly see alot of connections between both cases. Don't know how he doesn't

I don't think there's necessarily any sloppiness/laziness in play on the part of the police, but it does seem like there might be a bit of tunnel vision at work (the authorities taking Mike's history of DV/abuse and painting him as the likely suspect to the exclusion of all other possibilities).

If they were actually serious about calling him a suspect, then they would've come up with some theory/reason as to why he went out of his way to drop his daughter off at a K-Mart instead of with relatives and/or they'd have a pretty good idea of how he possibly died himself.

The fact Diana was stripped & the way her hands were bound together with the fact there was no trace evidence (rope, pill bottle if he ODed, knife, gun etc) to indicate how he might've died (located near/around his remains) should make it somewhat obvious someone else did it.

Agreed with everything you said, except I do think the initial police were a bit lazy/sloppy.

It took two months after Crystal was found for a hiker to find Diana. Then it took 25 years for another hiker to find Mike's skull. I wonder how much the police actually scoured the area?

Both of these points are reasons why I don't think Riemer was guilty. He was probably killed the same way Diana was; stabbed to death. It seems weird to me that the detective thinks Riemer was injured near where his truck and Diana's body was ultimately found, but decided to wander roughly a 1/4 mile away and die there. Why not stay with Diana if he killed her and then himself? And why not leave Crystal with his father?

I'd venture he was killed more like Ruth than Diana; decapitated and possibly shot.

I think whoever killed them tried to frame Riemer for murdering Diana and possibly the other couple which is why Diana's murder looked like a "crime of passion" but also had the tube sock tied around her neck

I think that's why Riemers skull is just now being found. Riemer was possibly buried somewhere in the area, or his corpse was taken but his skull was left behind.

Killing Diana and then hiding Mikes corpse makes it seem like Mike was the perp, which the police fell for.

Also when Mike went to see his father before going to the woods was it possible that Diana was waiting in the truck?

If the perp was some random wacko (as has been suggested earlier in this thread), then he got incredibly lucky that Mike had a penchant for abuse/DV.

On the flipside, I've started wondering about the likelihood of this being someone who knew Diana and/or Mike (and who knew he/she could frame Mike after killing Diana)........

The "I love you Diana" note left on the dashboard would indicate it was someone she knew who killed her.
