Has anyone noticed some improved speed over the last few days? It seems like there is less delay between most page loads. Database intensive processes like the search are still going to take some time, but overall it seems much more responsive.

The server load has rarely gone over 1-2 since I made some tweaks. It would sometimes spike to 4-6 before settling down.

I made some of the suggested changes to the SQL configuration. I also turned off the virus scanner, which was using a lot of CPU power. I can run it manually when needed.

The biggest change I made was making the photo galleries viewable to only registered members. I tried slowing down the spiders/bots, but there were times when too many requests were being made. It was using way too much memory. It was probably the major reason for the periodic slowdowns.

We had many more new registrations than usual the last few days. Hopefully some of them will become active members on the message boards.

The other thread is always bumped up when things are bad. Only fair to bump this one when things are good.

Things ARE good! I wonder if those DoS attacks had been going on for awhile, but they really ramped them up that one morning.

The problems started around April 21. There were many duplicate posts. I was having trouble connecting to the FTP on the first attempt. I could tell it was probably being flooded with connections.

I'm not sure if a few IP addresses could have caused it to slow down for weeks. It looks like some of them were spam bots (198.144.149.253, 198.144.149.254, 199.167.138.22 and 216.244.66.230). The last one was probably the culprit. https://www.abuseipdb.com/check/216....?page=1#report

Thankfully I finally got a high level tech support guy who could see what was happening. It was kind of a blessing in disguise to have it down for a few hours for them to diagnose and fix it.

The server load is now around 1 compared to 2-3 as it was before. Everything just seems faster now. Hopefully there will be far fewer duplicate posts.

I haven't seen any duplicates since the morning down.

Unfortunately some posters don't seem to know how to remove their own duplicates, or just don't want to bother. It ain't rocket science.
