I remember it aired in the Spring of 1989 and starred Corin Nemec as Alan. It was produced by Eddie Murphy Productions. It received excellent reviews.

Prior to his signature role as Parker Lewis in FOX's Parker Lewis Can't Lose Corky "what a cute name" Nemec starred in a 1989 sitcom that aired on CBS called What's Alan Watching? that told the story of Alan a guy who lives with his family and has a huge weakness for TV shows. Though it may seem similar to Malcolm In The Middle What's Alan Watching? was a really cool sitcom. Though the only episode aired was the pilot episode What's Alan Watching was cancelled due to low promotion. The show also starred Fran Drescher and was the sitcom debut of Eddie Murphy in his only sitcom role where he played various characters and also featured guest appearences by Alex Trebek The Smothers Brothers and other famous stars. Had CBS given What's Alan Watching? a chance and more episodes than the lone pilot episode CBS would've had a strong sitcom hit. But at least it paved the way for Corky Nemec to become a huge sitcom star and a teen idol
