Default CHCH TV - SUMMER 2022

Spring is finally here meaning summer will soon follow. Just before it arrives, CHCH will have a new look to its daytime lineup which should take effect right around the time that it is getting ready to present its fall upfront schedule, roughly between May 10-15. No new additions will be made until then but there will be a few series that will return to the lineup, including a couple of my favorites and one that should have stayed hidden that will double the amount of weak links in an otherwise good schedule. I dedicate this new schedule to my friend Katie Ann because I know she will like it. We start with the biggest strength: the morning group.

10:00 am The Dick Van Dyke Show (NEW TIME) (moves from 5:00 pm) (replaces "I Love Lucy" on May 11)

10:30 The Danny Thomas Show

11:00 The Andy Griffith Show

11:30 My Three Sons

12:00 pm Bonanza

1:00 Hawaii 5-0 (returns June 21 to its previous timeslot) (replaces Taxi and Benson)

2:00 Benson (new time) (moves from 1:30 pm) (replaces Soap on June 15)

2:30 Designing Women

3:00 Gilligan's Island (returns June 17) (replaces Maude)

3:30 That Girl

4:00 Laverne and Shirley

4:30 The Partridge Family (returns June 7) (replaces "Mork and Mindy")

5:00 Who's The Boss? (returns May 11) (replaces "The Dick Van Dyke Show")

5:30 Happy Days

SOURCE: CHCH Media Kit - March 2022

The new schedule tends to follow the same pattern as the one we have now. A very strong all black-and-white morning group (with both "Andy Griffith" and "My Three Sons" changing to colour by the summer) followed by a dull afternoon block that picks up steam once Gilligan returns and gets much better from there --- with one obvious exception. I am willing to forgive them for now because I am so looking forward to seeing "Gilligan's Island" and "The Partridge Family" again. I also find it interesting that "Hawaii 5-0" is coming back at 1 pm right where it started last year.

On the down side, I can only hope and pray that one day I will live in a world where I will no longer have to see "Designing Women" and "Who's The Boss?" on a retro TV schedule but that may be wishful thinking for now. It took more than 2 years for the pandemic to end but this may take longer because the viruses are still lingering on your TV sets at 2:30 and 5 pm respectively.

Closing on a positive note, can you think of a better replacement for Lucy than Dick Van Dyke? In fact, the morning group looks just like what I predicted last fall when I was hoping that his show will arrive and it did. Now that group looks very awesome and I can't wait to get up early and watch them again. Like I've mentioned before, get your wish lists early because you never know. It's worked well for me so far.

Thank you, Sal.

It's great that you were able to get this information so early.

I had given up on CHCH releasing a media kit, so it's wonderful to see all the stats and information put together. Thank you for the link!

You are right, I do like this schedule. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" definitely belongs with that group of morning shows and it's good that it will move to 10am once "I Love Lucy" is over.

The big and pleasant surprise is "Hawaii-Five-O" coming back. I missed the first few seasons of H50, so this is a chance to watch it from the beginning.

I don't expect new shows to be added until next fall, but you never know. I was hoping that "Gomer Pyle USMC" might be added. I enjoyed his introduction on "The Andy Griffith Show." The "Lucy" shows would be nice. "Golden Girls" would be fantastic.

Top of my wish list of shows is always "WKRP in Cincinnati."

I wouldn't mind these shows returning

Bewitched
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Newhart
Barney Miller
The Brady Bunch
Cheers

Any of these shows, some that have aired multiple times, would be better than "Who's the Boss?"

Thanks again, Sal. This is some great news for the beginning of Spring!

Does CHCH broadcast these programs on the live stream on their website?

CHCH does have a live stream on their website but the playback works best (naturally) when the retro shows aren't on. The best hours seem to be from 6-10 am during "Morning Live" and during the 6 and 11 pm news. However, you could get lucky from time to time. You never know. I would try in the morning or in the late afternoon because that's when the best shows are on. Here it is. Good luck.

Thanks. I’ve been wanting to record their prints of “My Three Sons” because I think some are older than the prints MeTV airs here in the U.S. I don’t have access to a satellite feed, so the live stream is my only option. MeTV was recently added to streaming service Frndly TV and their feed of MeTV does air the show, so I’m hopeful that it’ll also air on CHCH’s stream.

Those of you that are regular watchers of CHCH's retro shows might have noticed an odd scheduling quirk this week which I can't explain. It has to do with "The Danny Thomas Show". On Tuesday morning, they aired an episode called "Party Wreckers" with guest star Gale Gordon that appeared near the end of Season 8 but the next day the episode that was shown was "Be A Pal To Your Son" from the start of Season 4. I figured this was it for the show and they would just keep going like this until they reached the end of Season 8 again. So then I checked the schedule to see what would happen and I was surprised at the results. The show will continue with more episodes from Season 4 from tomorrow until next Thursday when the episodes resume where they left off with "For Every Man There's A Woman" marking the start of Season 9. So things should be back to normal again and that should be good news for fans of this great show. I have no idea why CHCH is doing this. Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they're getting nervous about the fall schedule with the upfronts coming up soon. Their turn will come on June 1. I'll post the highlights from that day on this page.

When CHCH started airing The Danny Thomas Show, they started at season 4, and initially skipped the episodes that are airing this week and scheduled to air next week - episodes 4-8, and episode 17 of season 4.

Maybe they didn't have the episodes at the time, maybe there was something questionable about the episodes. I asked on the Danny Thomas page on this forum but there was no real response, no reason anyone could think of, for skipping the episodes.

It was jarring to go back to season 4 but I'm glad that CHCH is airing those skipped episodes now.

Any time "Who's The Boss?" comes on is like having a nightmare!

This was the first of many changes that I mentioned on the first page. This is because the last episode of "I Love Lucy" aired yesterday so it is now gone for awhile. But Dick Van Dyke is still around and as strong as ever. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" has left the 5 pm slot as of today and has replaced Lucy in the morning lineup, which still makes it a strong group overall. That's the only lineup change that you will see until June when the summer schedule takes effect. I mentioned these off the top as well. Here are a few quick highlights for you:

Thursday June 2 - Fall Upfronts Day when CHCH officially announces their fall schedule at 11:00 am.

June 7 - "The Partridge Family" replaces "Mork & Mindy" at 4:30 pm.

June 11 - "Benson" moves from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm, replacing "Soap".

June 17 - "Gilligan's Island" replaces "Maude" at 3:00 pm.

June 21 - "Hawaii 5-0" returns at 1:00 pm.

It has now been almost 2 months since CHCH's upfront presentation was made public and, just like last season, all that was revealed was a fancy new video and a primetime schedule that is nothing to write home about. The retro daytime schedule is about to get a little shorter and so is one of the classic series that will return this week. It's a very simple good news, bad news case.

First, the bad news. The latest media kit shows the daytime hours divided into 2 parts: Classic Retro Block 1 - Mornings and Classic Retro Block 2 - Afternoons. In between, at 1 and 1:30pm, will be 2 episodes of a new game show (of all things!!) called "Pictionary" based on the popular board game. It will be hosted by Jerry O'Connell, who I remember from seeing him playing Georgie, Sheldon's older brother on "The Big Bang Theory". Many years before, he began his career as a child on a CTV series called "My Secret Identity". If this game show fails, and I seriously hope it does, he's going to need one!

CHCH Media Kit - Fall 2022

Now, the good news. Right now, a number of series are starting their last seasons and will be gone by the end of August. I will keep you informed of their replacements when they arrive and will probably have them before CHCH does. The first series to end is "That Girl" which has its last episode "The Elevated Woman" air this Thursday at 3:30 pm. If you missed any episodes along the way, "That Girl" is now available online on CTV Throwback. Taking its place on TV will be "The Beverly Hillbillies" which returns this Friday at the same time but it won't be shown from the beginning! The first episode that you will see is the 9th episode "Pygmalion and Elly". I would expect the first 8 to be shown later about halfway through the series like what happened with "Make Room From Daddy" earlier this summer.

That's all I can tell you for now. Stay tuned for another update in about 3-4 weeks.

Very disappointed that CHCH is adding a game show. I could not believe it. I was enjoying watching "Hawaii Five-0" at 1pm.

Jerry O'Connell is on "The Talk" at 2pm weekdays on Global and CBS, and he is very personable, I just have no interest in game shows and will not watch it.

CHCH remains unpredictable when it comes to retro shows. I guess they will be adding new shows that they have never aired, but that media kit does not give a hint what they will be. It's all last year's shows featured.

Last year I started watching "Beverly Hillbillies" right at the very end of the last season. I guess you don't remember that CHCH started airing the show from season 1 at the end of August, but they only aired the first 8 episodes. On September 1 they switched to "I Love Lucy" at 11:30am. I guess they're just continuing from where they left off.

I always come here to see if you've got the scoop, but also the TV listings will reveal their replacement shows in August, it's just that they may be temporary, and they'll drop them for new shows in September, like they did last year with "Beverly Hillbillies."

At this point the list of shows I don't want to see is longer than the list of shows I do want to see.

Update on what is replacing "That Girl."

CHCH removed "The Beverly Hillbillies" from the schedule and replaced it with "Mork and Mindy." The pilot episode of M&M is on the schedule on Friday July 29 at 3:30pm.

I will be happy when Benson and Designing Women are gone. Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley will be ending soon too.

A few weeks ago a promo for the Morning Live show said that Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox, the stars of CHiPS would be appearing the next day. I didn't watch it but I'm guessing that CHiPS is one of the shows soon to be added to the CHCH schedule. Stations often do cross promotions that way.

You are right. It was "Mork & Mindy" after all. I watched a bit of it yesterday just to make sure and there it was. You mentioned before how unpredictable CHCH could be with the retro shows and this is living proof. About a week ago, I checked the schedule for an update and it had "The Beverly Hillbillies" starting from the 9th episode onwards and I was sure that it was coming back. A few days later, I looked again to make sure and it had BOTH series occupying the same time slot and alternating days which was incredibly confusing. They must have sensed that right away because the last time I checked it had only "Mork and Mindy" there and that's what they'll be showing from now on.

So how will this affect future schedules? I would think now that if they were planning to show "The Beverly Hillbillies" after all, they might save it for a different slot and place it either at 4 pm right after "Mork & Mindy", replacing "Laverne & Shirley" which will end soon, or possibly in place of "Happy Days" when it ends after 3 weeks. It could also show up in the morning block which will look a lot different in September. I can only hope it's as great as it is now or when those series were in their early stages.

I don't want to make any predictions for now because I have no idea what might happen. That game show idea caught me by surprise and it still stinks. I'll say for now that I can see "Maude" coming back and that would also be awful. I'll be back with further updates soon.
