Yeah, that was stupid but this is just a TV show not real life. As a matter of fact, any ONE of them could've lived alone & paid $300 a month rent by themselves!
Maybe they had to send money back home or had a drug habit.

And even when Jack opened up his restaurant getting more income he could've moved out of the apartment sooner.

Three People struggling to pay the rent kind of defeated the purpose of living together. Jack was unemployed for the first 5 seasons so it was only two incomes so his ass should never have moved in

Some of you are too young to remember. Minimum wage was $2.30 in 1977 which comes out to $92 (before taxes) per week if you worked 40 hours. Remember that Jack was unemployed when he moved in. I am sure Janet Chrissy made a little more than minimum wage but probably not much more. In one episode Janet celebrated a ten cent raise. $300 for a 2 bedroom apt near the beach was lots of money in 1977.
When it started to get ridiculous was when Terri moved in. She was a working professional and could afford to live on her own. Jack owned his own business too. By then everything was getting stale with Threes Company. But the original premise 3 people struggling to make it together worked perfectly. Janet even had patches on her jeans

Jack never owned his own car and promptly totaled Janet's new used car.
Here's a guy trying to impress a rich woman in the gambling episode. I think he brags to her about being wealthy- owns his own restaurant but can't get a car loan! Lol And there's Terri the work-a-holic nurse working double shifts and all 3 of them are riding busses in car centric California. |
