Did he have no parents or siblings? For someone who seems so connected to family, I'm surprised.

You're right! Especially, considering that a large number of Gomer's misunderstandings and antics stemmed from him seeming to have been 'wet behind the ears' and overprotected by his guardians until he'd just very recently been unleashed on the world! It was interesting how Aunt Bee seemed to have persuaded the USMC that she WAS his actual aunt when she visited him on the base (which got them more riled up re her reactions to his Marine life than had it been known that she was, at best, a family friend). Of course, in Southern US small towns, it was almost customary for close family friends to informally claim each others' relatives as one's own but that's not the same as a legal much less military definition. Ironically, the only known family member I can recall was his cousin Goober but they seemed to have had very little to with each other other than Gomer passing on the Pyle baton to him when he spun off! |

I guess I stand corrected re Gomer's parents! I wonder if they were still living when he opted for the Marines or had Grandma Pyle outlived her son and daughter-in-law (which may explain why she visited onbase but neither of them did). Odd that Grandma Pyle didn't visit her other grandson Goober on either of his shows. BTW, Grandma Pyle was played Enid Markey who'd played the very first known onscreen Jane in "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1918! |

After Gomer was fired by Wally, Gomer had nowhere to go and had to stay with Andy for a while. It seemed odd that he had nowhere else to go. One would have to assume that his parents were deceased at that point.

One episode that just popped into my head as I was writing that was the "The price of tomatoes" where either he or Mr. Purcell(Denver Pyle - no relation ) mentions whether he or his family ate Beefsteak tomato pie. I am just wondering if he mentions them in that one.Another one that popped into my head was the "Captain Ironpants" episode where I am wondering if Gomer mentions learning his manners from his mom or something because that Captain was questioning his manners. I am going to have to go back and rewatch some episodes. |
