Default Bub era vs Uncle Charlie era?

Do you prefer the Bub episodes or Uncle Charlie episodes?

Until a few weeks ago I didn't even know there was a Bub, but he is great. It's good to see that William Frawley went on to another show that was such a hit, and his character is so gruff yet sweet.

I don't remember Uncle Charlie, and it's going to be a while before those episodes air, but I don't imagine I could like him more than Bub.

I definitly like Bub better, he was gruff but loveable. I thought Uncle Charlie could be a little TOO gruff sometimes and rarely had those "warm" moments

Bub by a mile! In some ways I like Bub better than Fred Mertz. I think Frawley was really good with kids.

They're in the second half of season 3 now and Uncle Charley comes in in the middle of season 5. So it won't be too long.

They're comparable characters so it's hard to pick the better one. The writing was better in the Bub era, I'll have to say that.

I like Bub more than Uncle Charlie, but I liked the later years of the series more than the early years.

Bub wins this contest for me too. BUT I really do also like Uncle Charlie, he's great in his role, one of my favorite grouchy old men. Both these "dudes" are a couple of my favorite grouchy guys.

Uncle Charlie for me. I have a soft spot for Bub though.

I'd have to say the Uncle Charlie years - but it's probably because that's all I saw in reruns growing up.

CHCH is currently running the black & white "Bub" years and some of the episodes are pretty good, but overall I think the color ones were a bit stronger.

Hopefully CHCH will run them all so I can make a fair comparison!

Bub for the win! He definitely had had more chemistry with his son-in-law and having helped raise his motherless grandsons from infancy and childhood than would his brother Uncle Charley who came upon his nephew-in-law and teen great-nephews but did seem to bond with his adoptive preteen great-nephew (whom he was the legal mother(?!?) of in their unnamed Midwestern state) due to the two of them joining the family at roughly the same time!

For me, definitely Bub. I like William Frawley. He made the acting look so easy. And Bill Demarest’s voice got on my nerves.

Bub by a mile. The first 5 seasons are the real deal.

Bub all the way. Frawley may have had his issues IRL, but as Bub (who, incidently, I found more likeable than Fred Mertz), he may have been rough around the edges, but he had a good heart and a genuine affection for his grandsons and son-in-law. The writing and direction in the ABC version was also far superior to CBS's, which usually seemed tired and lazy, especially in the
final years.
As for Demarest's Uncle Charley, he came off as, IMO, a pale imitation of Bub. He was a charmless, autocratic sourpuss who only seemed to tolerate the Douglas clan (I may be biased, though, as he always reminded me of an uncle I had and couldn't stand).

That's a good summary.

Charley seemed constantly cranky. Sourpuss is a good description.
