I've been watching a lot of CBC lately (and missing my favorite country-take that as you will!), and earlier when I did a search on my DVR, I found a few shows that look pretty good so I set my DVR to tape them. Looking foreword to seeing them

Here's an old Canadian sketch comedy series that I haven't seen in a long time that was made available this week on the free streaming service TUBI:


The David Steinberg Show


David Steinberg is a Canadian comedian who gained fame (and plenty of notoriety) on the Smothers Brothers show where he performed various characters, including a priest who would give a weekly "sermonette" on the show. It was one of these sermonettes that got CBS and its censors angry and the show was cancelled soon after. In Canada, the show ran on CTV uncensored so we got to see everything.

From there, Steinberg moved back to Canada where he starred in "The David Steinberg Show" which is a lot like "Seinfeld" and "The Larry Sanders Show" in the way it is presented. After the opening monologue, we see Steinberg act out a fictional version of his real life where he meets some famous guest stars (including Tommy Smothers, Milton Berle and Ethel Merman) and an interesting group of regular cast members like Bill Saluga, the owner of the "Hello Deli", who is most remembered for his "Johnson" routine that he does on the show ("Oh, you don't have to call me Johnson....etc.") and a few of the SCTV cast (Martin Short, John Candy, Joe Flaherty) in one of their earliest TV appearances. If you're a fan of shows like SCTV, you'll like this one too!
