I wouldn't really say it was a recast but for Heath Ledger's final movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell completed Ledger's role.

It worked plotwise since the man's appearance changes as he travels between imaginary worlds. I'm curious to see how this is.

Yeah that one might actually have worked since Ledger wasn't really strongly associated with something that hadn't even come out yet, plus as you said, the otherworldly aspect of it might make the recasting less unbelievable.
