In a large majority of cases stars tend to present self-serving facts to excuse any failure they are associated with, all that said I think Lee Grant makes some valid points. In addition, NBC as a network seemed uniquely ill-suited to put this series over. The network had only four half hour series scheduled at the start of the 75-76 season. All four were scheduled during the 8pm-9pm timeslot. Sanford and Son and Chico and the Man were logically coupled together on Fridays, and The Montefuscos and Fay were scheduled to play in the 8pm-9pm slot on Thursdays. Fay was the backend of the hour, The Montefuscos was a show about a multigenerational family dinner on Sunday evenings. A family show against the mega family hit The Waltons on CBS, what kind of counter-programming strategy was that. Those two shows should have been scheduled between 9pm-10pm with Fay leading off at 9. NBC could have moved Ellery Queen the 9pm show to 8. I think the show would have had an uphill battle but scheduled at 8:30 on Thursdays the show had no chance.
