Legendary improvisational comedian Jonathan Winters will receive the Pioneer Award at Sunday's TV Land Awards (9 p.m., TV Land). Here are five of Winters' most memorable TV gigs: Davis Rules (1991-92) - In this sitcom, he played the eccentric father of a single dad/ school principal (Randy Quaid) who was trying to raise three boys. Mork & Mindy (1981-82) - Played Mearth, Mork's (Robin Williams) fully grown-at-birth son. (Williams will present the TV Land award to Winters, the man he considers his comedic mentor.) The Wacky World of Jonathan Winters (1972-74) - Syndicated comedy-variety show that featured improvisational sketches, along with many guest appearances by Tony Orlando and Dawn. The Jonathan Winters Show (1967-69) - Hosted this CBS comedy-variety show in which he played many of his famous characters, including wacky old lady Maude Frickert. The Twilight Zone (Oct. 13, 1961) - In one of the series' classic episodes, "A Game of Pool," Winters played a deceased legendary pool champ who comes back to life to take on one more game with the current top dog (Jack Klugman). |

I'm glad to see that Jonathan Winters is finally receiving some well-deserved
recognition for his huge body of work. His credits are too numerous to mention here but a few of the most memorable moments for me include: The Jonathan Winters Show "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" His many, many TV guest appearances A rare dramatic role in "The Shadow" His voiceover work in cartoons (e.g., Linus the Lionhearted) and in puppeteer Bil Baird's Schultz & Dooley commercials for Utica Club beer Mork and Mindy One of my favorite comedian/actors. One of the few greats from the golden age of television still left. Congrats, Jonathan. Thanks for the laughter. |

I watched Hee Haw more often in the seventies than in the eighties, so
I wasn't aware of that. |

Alas, there was no mention of Winters' rare dramatic role on the TZ at the TVLand awards.
