One of my pet peeves over something that's really inconsequential, is when the person who used it last, stops their cook cycle prematurely, and leaves like 12-20 seconds lingering on the dial

I get yelled at 2-3 times a week for leaving time left on the microwave. Is it that difficult for the next person to clear the time? They already have to input their own time, so I don't see it as such a big deal. I guess it's kind of like leaving the toilet seat up.

As for me I typically let the timer run down. On occasions where I stop it prematurely I always clear the timer.

I let it run its course full cook time. unless it starts popping. And I always clear the timer.

On the occasions where I do stop early, I usually double tap the "stop" control, once to stop the cook process, and the second to clear any remaining balance on the timer.

I suspect those who leave time remaining on the clock, prefer to just open the door as their method of stopping the cook cycle, and once the door is open they are more focused on their food, than anything else.

I'm not fond of the idea of reaching with my hand, into a microwave that has just been stopped, which is why I use the 'off' button instead of the door safety switch to end the cycle

I voted for stop when necessary, always clear the remaining time.

I use a microwave oven more in the summer months, when I don't want to add more heat into the house from the gas kitchen stove. I recommend the Panasonic models, very reliable.

My family had a 1974 analog Amana that ran for more than 4 decades, before its controls fell victim to a power surge. That thing was as heavy as all get out!

That annoys me too, usually only happens in the break room at work. If I take food out early I always clear the timer.

Failing to clear the timer, imo, is like forgetting to flush.

I had a room mate once who was notorious at forgetting to flush, and anytime I would mention it, she accused me of being hard to get along with.

So I decided on a different strategy, editorializing on her "leavings".

"Oh, I think I saw some blood, you better go get checked for polyps" or "helpful" suggestions about parasites...and before long, she was cured.

Not quite the same piece of equipment though. I have never tried to cook a tv dinner in the toilet.

As for microwave usage, I generally clear the timer but if someone else doesn't it is not a big deal to me because when I use it I always hit the reset button first before I cook anything anyway. Either way, it is not that difficult or time consuming to tap a button. Not flushing is a bit more smelly and gross though.

Part of the fun here, is the inconsequential nature of the offense. I think the only way it really impacts me is that often I have my hands full of other things, on my way to the table, and can usually hit 1,2,or 3 minutes with the back of my knuckle without having to set anything down....but the "clear" button is down near the countertop, and I usually have to set things down to reach it. (2 litre bottles, or bowls of stuff like salad etc)

So it interferes with my attempts to be efficient in other matters

FWIW, I also form opinions about those of my neighbors who never shovel the snow off their sidewalks during the winter, that last well through the following summer.
