Oliver's Jaded Past (Haney and Kimball)

I've been watching Green Acres from the first episode on MeTV, and I just got to season three, episode 25, "Oliver's Jaded Past".

This is about Lisa demanding Oliver take her on a two week vacation to New York to commemorate their living in Hooterville for two years. Oliver gets caught up in the party life there, and is ready to take his old lawyer job back and move back to New York. But Lisa wants to go home to Hooterville.

But the reason I posted this is I think this is the very first episode where neither Mr. Haney or Mr. Kimble appears at all. In every other episode so far, both characters show up at some point or other. At least I'm pretty sure, because I've been noticing they're in every episode. I was beginning to think they would be in every show of the entire run.

Maybe they're the same person? Lol.

Up until the episode I mentioned, which is more than halfway through the series, I am almost certain they both were in every episode.

I know for sure they both weren't in the premiere episode. The only supporting cast to appear in the first episode were Mr. Drucker, Mr. Ziffel, and Arnold.

I'm sure there are a few more examples. IMDB lists Pat Buttram being in only 147 out of 170 episodes, so he was absent 23 times. That's kind of surprising considering how integral he is to the show's formula.

I can't help but feel the supporting cast were treated unfairly by Jay Sommers in this regard. Most ensemble series tend to recognize the whole cast in the opening credits and guarantee them a spot in every episode.

I could believe that, they were still setting the series storyline up. I think Oliver meets Haney in the second episode? Anyway, it seems to me once they get on the show, they're in every episode (until "Oliver's Jaded Past").

I have a few seasons left to watch, so I'll be paying attention. 23 episodes is a lot.

It's not an ensemble series, Albert and Gabor are the stars, the show is focused on Oliver and Lisa.

Here is a definition of an ensemble cast:

"multiple principal actors and performers who are typically assigned roughly equal amounts of screen time".

I can admit it doesn't meet the full criteria for an ensemble series. The Oliver/Lisa dynamic is the most developed and fundamental aspect of the series.

At the same time, the show would be so much emptier without the supporting cast. Most episodes rely on them to a significant degree.

I agree the other regulars were great. Green Acres intro was so good that maybe they didn't want to fool with it. The Beverly Hillbillies didn't add Raymond Bailey or Nancy Kulp to the opening credits until the 7th season and I don't believe any of the Bradley girls (including Pual Henning's daughter) were named in the opening credits of Petticoat Junction (although we do see them in the water tank).

I feel like there are quite a few episodes in which Mr. Kimball does not appear. When I was little he was my favorite character, and it seems like it was kinda a treat to get a Mr Kimball episode, so it seems like there were several he's absent from

I looked on IMDB, and it looks like either he or Haney we absent from many first season episodes, or they both were. I don't know if that is accurate or not. I just know I've been rewatching them all from the beginning, and at some point I started noticing they were in every episode, even if they had to shoehorn them in there at the end. So they at least had a long streak when they were in every episode.

The last one I watched they were missing, which was the one where Oliver and Lisa took Arnold to Hollywood. It makes sense that they weren't in the episodes that took place away from Hooterville. In the previous episode, they were having a Chamber of Commerce meeting, and I thought it was interesting that they sat next to each other.
