I received my season 2 DVD yesterday and OMG its incredible. I owned Season 1 for over 10 years. Season 1 on DVD is the same show you see on TV. Season 2 DVD is the original show. It has a different intro and closing credits. It also has the original studio audience laugh track. There are so many additional moments/scenes that are included. The show on TV today has edited out so many moments. During the closing credits, each actor takes turns saying "Mamas Family was recorded in front of a studio audience" and then they tell a joke unique to that episode.
I have only watched a few episodes so far but OMG there are scenes I have never seen before. During Supermarket, the episode begins with Naomi and the male customer singing commercial jingles in the Supermarket. Now we can understand why Mama gets annoyed waiting. But this scene is cut. Then on ASK THELMA there is an scene with a customer asking about Kitty Litter and Mama makes jokes. When Naomi is training Mama there is a scene that explains it is morning before the customers come in. Mama shows up late and apologizes and Naomi explains about the cash register. On Amateur Night when they are at the Bigger Jigger, Mama tells her family that she made a big pot of chili that the kids are eating at home and questions why Vint ordered the chili. Naomi explains that Vint likes the Bigger Jigger chili the best and Mama takes point explaining that the Bigger Jigger chili has too many beans. Also we learn why Mama guess the song the accordion player plays because the announcer explains she plays Spanish songs. We also get to see Naomi's friend from Food Circus on the stage and we get a few more seconds of Vint's dance on stage. Later we hear Naomi tell Mama that she's tried to ground Vint from getting such a big head, etc. OMG so many new moments I feel like a kid at Christmas and get to rediscover this show. Its a shame Season 1 was not kept in its original form like Season 2. |

Season 1 was re-released in 2013 with the original uncut episodes. Unfortunately, the original masters for two episodes were lost so the syndicated versions were used. The episodes in question were Mama's Boyfriend and Cellmates.

On the Flaming Forties episode the subplot of Mama's feet is completely cut out. Some of Mama's jokes make sense now when she holds up a shoe and says "no wonder my feet are so messed up today" The episode begins with Mama limping into the house with Aunt Fran taking her back from the foot doctor. In the end you see Mama soaking her feet in a tub after dancing at the school. But the funny part is on Obscene Phone Call they do not use the Willie Nelson song. They use another song so apparently they did not get permission for the DVD but its strange how the Willie Nelson song is shown on TV today. I just love all these scenes I have never seen before. Looks like I will have to buy the reissue of Season 1. |

It's also Time-Life, like season 2.
I'm sure I posted this someplace already, but several season 2 episodes have music cuts. When they substitute something else that's not a big problem, but I got really irritated when they ditched Harper Days Are Here Again from the mayor episodes. I had to edit myself corrections on that, and restore the music. And while I was at it I restored the other cuts, too--using MeTV as a source. Aside from that problem, it was great to see these episodes as they were originally broadcast. I'd never seen the episodes on NBC, so I'd never seen the Harvey Korman openers, the original openers showing the house exterior as it was for NBC, the cut scenes, etc. |

The original house was actually located in the real Raytown, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. There was a video posted on You Tube several years ago from someone who was able to locate the house on Google Maps using the Street View feature and the street and the actual house match up (don't known if it is still up). There were some changes after more than 30 years, such as trees cut down, houses repainted or landscaping changes. but it was definitely the right street.

There were even 2 houses used in the NBC version. One for the exterior shots at the beginning and end, and the Mama for Mayor episodes and the 2 where Mama is driving and buying a car it's a different house. I know the house used in Mama for Mayor and the driving episodes has been used in TV commercials. |

I do like how they went to a neighborhood in Missouri to make it so authentic. If the Pasadena house ever sells, it would be outstanding if HGTV bought it and did what they did to the Brady house...turn it into the TV set
