Ms. Merrill was right in her criticism of Mrs. Murdoch, little Chuckie’s insufferable mother.

I didn’t like that she decided to impose on Wally (and, ultimately Beaver) to take little Chuckie to get a new pair of shoes at the local department store, because Mrs. Murdoch was too “busy” to take Chuckie out shopping herself.

That really took some chutzpah on Mrs. Murdoch’s part to ask Wally to take her bratty and precocious child to go shoe shopping. Like Wally and Beaver didn’t have better things to do than schlepp over to that department store with Chuckie for her. Maybe June should have “reciprocated” and asked Mrs. Murdoch to take Beaver to the dentist or to drive Ward to the hospital for Ward’s scheduled colonoscopy?

Marjorie Reynolds, the actress who portrayed the bumptious Mrs. Murdoch, also appeared in “Holliday Inn,” in which she sang “White Christmas” with the great Bing Crosby. Ms. Reynolds also portrayed the beloved Peg Reilly, with William Bendix on the tv series, “The Life of Reilly.” Needless to say, Mrs. Peg Reilly was MUCH more likable than the all-too-pushy Mrs. Murdoch.

Although, Ms. Reynolds also portrayed the amiable mother of Wally’s date to that all-night high school graduation party, which ended up badly for Wally’s drenched date. Wally’s date’s father, though, was a bit of a blowhard and a pompous prig, sort of like “Mr. Nice Guy,” Alec Baldwin.

Ms. Reynolds really over-acted in the scene where she was crying late in the Chuckie's Shoes episode. I tend to blame actors for scenes like this, but it sometimes may be directors asking for it. She also played Chuckie's mother, briefly, in Beaver the Babysitter.

Chuckie's New Shoes wouldn't be on a Best of Beaver list, but the author of the article needs to realize the lines she was complaining about were going for laughs. There are other lines like this in the series.

IIRC the actor who played the blowhard father in the All Night Party episode was character actor Herbert Rudley. Marjorie Reynolds was just fine in that episode. She got to play the good spouse.

I think Herbert Rudley was also on “The Mother’s-in-Law” with Eve Arden and Kay Ballard, who were both great comedic actresses.

Mr. Rudley also appeared as the doubting Project Blue Book USAF officer, who is presented with a toy ufo, that Herman and Grandpa believe is a real Martian flying saucer on “The Munsters.”

In films, Mr. Rutledge portrayed the intolerant US Army officer in “The Young Lions,” with Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando, and also as the shell-shocked US Army sergeant in “A Walk in the Sun,” with Dana Andrews and Lloyd Bridges, about the Texas Division’s landing at Salerno, Italy in 1943. My father liked that film because he was at the Salerno landings as a member of the Texas Division. The film also features the late, great Huntz Hall, the popular Glimpy/Satch of the Dead End Kids/Bowery Boys films. Talk about an eclectic cast!

Not to wander too far off into the political, but the "us savings bond" promo is a surprise to me. Not that they wouldn't want a squeaky-clean family like the Cleavers as their hawkers. It's just hard to imagine the span between entertainment and the government being so blatant.

I remember actual commercials advertising the virtues of savings bonds, but never realized the LITB show did testimonials

Since the Dollar is no longer bound to tangible value (gold), the government can now just expand the money supply to pay for its whims and fancies. I think 1971 was the year that Nixon abolished the gold standard.

The resulting "cost" is directly passed on to the consumer in the form of inflation, so no method of repayment is needed/

The Blind Date is one of my favorite episodes.

Another one along that line (I don't remember if it's on their list) is a later episode where Beaver ends up with two dates for a dance, and he has to get rid of one. Eddie comes in the room and advises Beaver to do the thing he calls "ditchin' the dodo." The plan is to be rude to the one he wants to ditch.

Beaver tries it and of course the whole thing backfires and he ends up with no date.

Looks like the author watches these old shows just to look for things to be offended by.

The only episode on that list I'm not a big fan of is Chuckie's New Shoes, but that has nothing to do with a badly aged joke, the whole premise is annoying, Chuckie is annoying, but can't blame him considering his mom.

So right! Chuckie's only in a couple of episodes and this one is pretty sub-par. He has a minor role in Beaver the Babysitter, and there's blunder in that one, in that he doesn't even know Beaver.

He's also in Beaver's Frogs, and has a pretty funny scene with Beaver, where they talk about the facts of frog life.

I think his only other part (not yet a named role) is a bit part in Wally the Businessman.

Agreed. He was very funny in those 2 episodes- his role in Wally The Businessman, he was a regular Junior Eddie, I could see Eddie doing stuff like that at that age.
