Miguel Cabrera becomes seventh MLB player with 3,000 hits, 500 homers

Stepping to the plate with 2,999 career hits, 2 outs, runners on second and third, in a 1 run ball game, Miguel Cabrera posed just too much of a threat to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. So Boone flashed the 4 finger salute, infuriating Tigers fans that had paid admission to see history being made. The result was predictable.

I take it you’re new to baseball, so allow me to explain. One run game, Yankee offense struggling, one of the most dangerous hitters in history up, you walk him to set up the lefty/lefty matchup, which is more favorable. Didn’t work out, but everyone in the stadium with baseball knowledge knew it was coming, including Miggy and Tigers.

May as well boo him for flying out and striking out twice when pitched to. He had his chances.

No, I understand perfectly well why it was done.

I just think that any stadium with 30K+ fans chanting "Yankees SUCK!!" deserves amplification.

And the fact that the strategy backfired is just groovy.

It was the right strategic move at the time. Maybe the next time they play, the Tigers can bean their first batter to send a message.

The Tigers are playing the Rockies at home this weekend. Miggy will still have a chance to get 3,000 in front of the fans.

I mean when you think about it, the way things played out will give Cabrera bragging rights, he will forever be able to recount how when he came to the plate with 2,999 hits...the mighty Yankees refused to pitch to him.

I actually thought that Cabrera showed good sportsmanship as he was walking into the dugout and gestured towards the scoreboard while waving 3 fingers at the disgruntled fans.

You hear him, and many other stars exclaim that winning ball games is more important than personal achievement.

Which sounds great, but often the utterance sounds so robotic that I wonder if it was a coached "sound bite" encouraged by their agents, to make them seem less greed motivated.

We were looking at the list today (pasted below, for easy perusal), trying to figure out what spot he’d eventually end up in. I think he could go top 20 but I think he’d have to go one more season after this to reach that.

He just turned 39 last week. He's signed through 2023. He has a couple option years after that, so he could be bought out (https://www.blessyouboys.com/2021/7/...in-mlb-history). He could play another three full seasons if he stays healthy and there aren't many games lost due to COVID-19, work stoppages or strikes. If the Tigers are competitive and he's still productive, he will probably stick around.

I think he could get another 350 or so hits if he averages 120-130 hits per season. He could get up to about 10th. Albert Pujols is still playing at age 42. He says it's his last season, but he's playing well. I edited your totals. He's up to 3,308.

Shouldn’t be any more stoppages. If they played thru Covid in 2020 and 2021 they’ll play through whatever comes next. Even if he himself gets it the player usually return pretty quickly. And this strike stuff is settled for now.

120 in each of the next 3 years seems high to me. I’ll stick with he goes top 20 but not top 10.

Having the universal DH will also help him. He won't have to sit when they play in the NL ballparks. They don't need him to play in the field any longer, so they can save some wear and tear. His health will be the major issue.

How the heck does Elvis Andrus have more hits than Jose Altuve? The prospects of another 3,000 hits player don't look good any time soon.
