Gerrit Cole, touted by some to be the best pitcher in baseball, was ousted after only 1 2/3 innings pitched last night in Detroit.

Cole amassed a whopping pitch count of 68 in only 1 2/3 innings, including an all time career worst of 46 pitches in the second inning alone. 46 pitches in one inning seems outrageous.

15 pitches per inning is considered the reasonable goal

Over 20 and the pitcher is no longer considered to be "effective"

over 30 is considered "fail"

over 40 is like "put on your helmets and listen for the air raid sirens"

I am truly shocked the Yankee manager allowed it to go on for as long as it did. Wouldn't surprise me at all to hear that Cole is headed to the IL

Luckily Tigers haven't learned how to catch pop ups yet and Yankees still won

He's had a bit of a rough start. It's hard to imagine he won't be able to turn things around.

At least he had a better outing than Dallas Keuchel did today.

To add insult to injury, the umps checked his glove after he got pulled. They should show some mercy when you get shelled that badly.

Good call. 6 2/3 shutout innings today, 4 hits allowed, 1 walk, and 9 strikeouts. Good to know for 30 mil a year he can still occasionally throw a good game without the sticky stuff

What's the deal with all these anti-Yankees threads? Maybe we can have one thread of rants.

It was too early to write him off. His stuff is filthy. I'm still getting used to the Guardians name.

Pretty simple. Yankees are the most popular team AND the most hated team.

Cole took a perfect game into the 7th against the Tigers last night. I think he figured them out.

By the way, the previous night Yanks Jameson Taillon took a perfect game into the 8th vs Angels. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Yankees became the first team in the expansion era (since 1961) to have two starting pitchers work at least six perfect innings in back-to-back games.
