Emilio Delgado, who played Sesame Street‘s Luis Rodriguez for nearly 50 years, has died. Delgado’s wife tells TMZ that the actor died Thursday, surrounded by family members, at their New York City home. She says her husband was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in December 2020 Delgado will be forever remembered for his role as Sesame Street‘s Luis Rodriguez, the most popular repairman on the block. A proficient guitar player and proud Mexican-American, Luis made his debut in 1971, then married his wife Maria (played by Sonia Manzao) in 1988. One year later, they welcomed a daughter named Gabi. Outside of Sesame Street, Delgado appeared in a number of well-known TV shows, including (the original) Hawaii Five-O, Falcon Crest, Law & Order, House of Cards and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. |

I wonder if Sonia Manzao will do a eulogy at his funeral?

I remember seeing Luis a lot when I watched Sesame Street as a toddler and Emilio Delgado was the perfect choice to play Luis because not only was he nice but he could sing in Spanish very good. If memory serves correctly Luis replaced the late Raul Julia as the new fix it man. And before Maria had a crush on Luis she used to be the crush of the character David but when Luis came Maria was perfect for Luis and he seemed to be her knight in shining armor because I never knew that they would have the very first Sesame Street wedding ever. And when Gabriella came along Gabi was so cute and a great fit for Sesame Street when she was little. I wonder if Sesame Street will replace the character Luis now that Emilio Delgado is gone?

A sad day on Sesame Street with the passing of Emilio Delgado who portrayed Luis. He was a groundbreaker as the first Hispanic character on a children's TV show. One of Sesame Street's most memorable moments was when Luis and Maria got married. May he rest in peace.

Sonia Manzano pays tribute to Emilio Delgado, her Sesame Street husband
Manzano, whose character Maria married Delgado's Luis on Sesame Street in a widely watched on-screen wedding in 1988, writes of her former co-star in Time magazine: "When I first met Emilio, in the late sixties, I thought he was an activist for the Cesar Chavez Farm Workers Union, because as a supporter he went around pinning Boycott Grapes buttons on everyone he came into contact with!" "Ultimately, his social consciousness didn’t end there. Days later, I realized he was one of us: a child of the ’60s and an actor happy to have a job. He could not have realized the impact he would have, especially on Latino children. My nephew, who is now in his 50s, told me that as a little boy, he wanted to grow up and become a man like Luis. How wonderful that Emilio’s strength, warmth, and kindness were attractive enough for children to want to emulate. Sesame Street always wanted the human cast members to be themselves, and in allowing Emilio to be himself they hit the jackpot." |
