He spoke often about how much his parents didn't care for him. That right there could've been the reason. They just never pursued anything that could've furthered his well-being.

Well, we could see that Steve was in the same Science class as Eddy and Waldo in one episode.
So he might have taken some classes with older students? |

^^^ I remember the season three episode when Steve is caught writing answers down during a test with the intention of giving them to Eddie.
