Was there ever any mention among the witches of the existence of God? What made me wonder about it is that I recently watched the episode when Samantha had her powers temporarily taken away by the Witches’ Council because she refused to renounce her marriage to Darrin. It seems to me that is an ability only a Supreme Being would possess…

So, you are saying that only god could revoke a witch's powers? Does that mean that god gave witches their power to begin with?
I thought that witches were from the other side of the supernatural family tree? |

I wasn’t necessarily referring to the God of Christianity. I was thinking in more general terms regarding a Supreme Being of some kind, one who would not deem witchcraft to be evil.

Not sure about all the witches, but Samantha worked at a church bazaar in one episode. It is alluded that she does go to a church. The same one that Mrs. Kravitz goes to.

Yes, the church bazaar episode and "Love is Blind" (the wedding is in a church; God is mentioned) are the only ones I can think of (besides the pilot, where it looks like their wedding is in a church) are the only ones where churches are seen/mentioned.
The witches in "Bewitched" are born with their powers; it doesn't appear to be a religion for them. Samantha sarcastically mentions "Beezlebub" to Darrin but just to mess with him ("All right. Gertrude is a witch. All my friends are witches, and we're just waiting for the right time to swoop down on Morning Glory Circle and claim it in the name of Beelzebub.") |

I think Samantha talked about a Church Social once.... I remember this being discussed a while ago here I think. I think witchcraft in this show has a different meaning that most ppl think of it.... it seems to be something they are born with in their DNA. Darrin and Samantha were likely of the Christian faith and likely attended church as most ppl did in those days.
Though I always thought, Samantha with her powers could answer the age old question, does God exist? She could zap the answer on a piece of paper and whatever came out would be reveling if you think about it. |

An odd and confusing clue to the nature of witches was revealed in season 1 "George the Warlock" where George flashes the "devil sign" to Samantha. And she exclaimed that he swooped in "like Lucifer."
![]() This was the Danny Arnold produced first year and some of Sol Saks original darker themes may have crept in here. Saks wanted traditional witches with broom and cauldrons. By season three Bill Asher fully excised any of that. |
