Default Why did Aunt Esther marry a drunk?

Why would a good woman like Aunt Esther marry a drunk with no job?

He possibly wasn't a drunk when they married, and Woodrow and Esther owned a hardware store and they lived above the store

Woody loved Esther, but it probably goes back to Esther's toxic family. The family was religious, judgemental, and jerks. Fred lost his wife early so he could make his opinions known. Fred loved Elizabeth so much that he kept his opinions to himself and took the abuse when she was alive, but after that, let them have it. Only put up with Esther, Ethel and the other sister's bull**** because they loved Lamont and Lamont could have an extended family who cared about him.

Woody had to put up with their crap also. Sisters like Ethel coming over and bullying Woody with "Esther, remember such and such who liked you, that you could have married.." or "Woody has this crappy hardware store, he is no better than Fred.". Woody kept his mouth shut from their abuse and started drinking. Fred lost his wife so he had license to be more free to tell the sisters off.

There is lots of examples of this in real life. In laws who bully someone because they feel the person isnt "good enough". This is why Fred would lash out and Woody would get a bottle and sit in the corner.

Well, the only other man known to have been willing to fool around her ONLY did so because he mistook her darkened room (and her silhouette) for those of her gorgeous yet still chaste sister Elizabeth's so who it's likely no one besides Woody would have been interested.

Maybe Woody thought that somehow Esther being SO religious meant that she'd have been been able to hook him up with sacramental wine (despite being in a dry Protestant denomination).
