Wifi is great in certain situations, but I believe that most people have adopted it as an excuse to not run wires. (lazy, basically)
When I first made the jump from dial up to cable (internet)m the installer wanted to put the cable modem next to the TV in the living room. (this was before wifi) And I said "wait a minute Festus, I'm not running wires room to room across the floor. Put a Tee connection down in the basement, and I'll take it from there. So, I built a nice shelf hanging off the back of the basement steps, put the modem and a router there, and then fished the walls with 10/100 cable and put formal wall boxes in each room where I expected to put a computer. Just the way things should be done. Then later, as wifi became all the rage, I updated to include, but really only use that when I've got the laptop out on the patio. I changed the SSID on my wifi network to "Infect_Rootkit", just to give a thrill to anyone who might try to hack my password. |

Knowing your affection for old tech, I really wonder if this thread might have been a ploy?
Perhaps you were fishing to see if anyone even knew about wired connection? eg "Oh knowes! The wifi is kerput, what will we ever do without internet?" etc |

Have you thought about checking the local Pawnshops for a used laptop?
You might be able to find a decent stand-in for a couple hundred bucks? |

It can be specially annoying when the PC is set up with a lot of shortcuts, such as viewport switcher, multi desktop, or application switcher that is triggered by key/mouse combinations. The pad has a bad habit of sending false triggers that initiate bells and whistles you never intended. I've got all that garbage either disabled, or limited to key combinations only |

i use a desktop enhancer utility called "Compiz", which provides some unique flexibility as well as some eye candy....... but installs pre-configured with a lot of razzle dazzle the developers believe deserve to be showcased, and the various names of many of the features are less than intuitive. So, I spent considerable time combing-out unwanted features that seemed more like "bugs" in the sense they caused actions I didnot care for, (similar to what you seem to be experiencing) And most of that dysfunction was key-mouse combinations, where I believe a normal mouse would have been less sensitive than my lap top's touch pad. So, I completely sympathize with what you are going thru. on a touchpad, normally when you get a split second "error" that causes the cursor to move 1000th of an inch, most people don't care, they just see the movement as "flicker", and ignore it. But, if you have dozens and dozens of key-mouse combinations pre-configured that trigger specific GUI activity,.. when that error coincides with a keystroke combination that is set up as an unanticipated shortcut, it can be very annoying. |
